D.C. approves concealed handguns for first time in four decades

This is a poorly written ordinance, but it is a step in the right direction for the nation's Capitol. They are at last facing the prospect of having to allow citizens to exercise their rights, even though they are being forced to do so.

Video Proves Cops Shot Guy in Walmart Immediately, For No Reason - Hit & Run : Reason.com

Video footage has been released in the shooting death of John Crawford, the man who was gunned down in a Beavercreek, Ohio, Walmart by cops who apparently thought he was armed and dangerous. In reality, Crawford had picked up a pellet rifle from the hardware section of the store and was carrying it around while he talked on the phone.

Something to pay attention to. It's worth reading the entire story, as there seem to be some inconsistencies.

The prohibitionists are already latching onto this though:

The FBI Says 'Active Shooter Incidents' Are On the Rise. What Does That Mean? - Hit & Run : Reason.com

The FBI released a report today suggesting that "active shooter incidents" grew more common from 2000 to 2013. Reason readers may wonder how to square that conclusion with the statistics we've published suggesting that mass shootings are not on the rise. There are two answers to that. One involves some potential problems with the FBI's numbers; we'll get to those issues in a moment. The other answer is simpler: "Active shooter" and "mass shooting" do not mean the same thing.

Prosecutor Drops Prison Threat Against Gun Owner Who Mistakenly Thought Her Pennsylvania Carry Permit Was Good in New Jersey - Hit & Run : Reason.com

Good news from Atlantic County, New Jersey: It looks like Shaneen Allen, the Philadelphia gun owner who faced a mandatory minimum sentence of three and a half years for driving across the Delaware River with a pistol in her purse, will escape prison after all. The Press of Atlantic City reports that Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain, who initially refused to approve Allen for a pretrial diversion program, has changed his mind.

How Bloomberg's Million-Dollar Desire For Gun Control Is Backfiring - Forbes

John Feinblatt, Everytown’s president, told USA Today, “We want gun safety to be an issue that people vote on.”
John R. Lott, Jr. says he’s fine with that statement. He just wants people to know the truth about what really reduces violence before they vote. He says, “I can’t find a single study from Bloomberg’s groups that aren’t loaded with errors. They have an anti-gun agenda and will lie to achieve it.”

A study by Carlisle E. Moody and Thomas B. Marvell that was published in Econ Journal Watch in January 2009, for example, looked into Lott’s findings and determined: “Many articles have been published finding that shall-issue laws reduce crime. Only one article, by Ayres and Donohue who employ a model that combines a dummy variable with a post-law trend, claims to find that shall-issue laws increase crime. However, the only way that they can produce the result that shall-issue laws increase crime is to confine the span of analysis to five years. We show, using their own estimates, that if they had extended their analysis by one more year, they would have concluded that these laws reduce crime.”

Lott told me, “The NRA and other gun-rights groups are doing a lot of important things, but we decided to fill an influential niche by not taking money from either side.
“Still,” Lott said, “honest research leads to real answers—not the political spin Bloomberg’s groups prefer.” Lott says because of this “the gun-control groups don’t want an honest debate. I’ve challenged Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun-rights groups [Everytown for Gun Safety and Mayors Against Illegal Guns] to debates many times but they always ignore me.”

Lott said, “When Bloomberg’s group puts out a press release they get huge coverage from the media and little critical analysis of their claims. When we do research that shows Bloomberg’s group is blatantly wrong we get coverage from FOX News and some other media, but the networks, CNN, the Washington Post and so on often ignore us. When those mainstream outlets do quote our studies they typically include the views of someone from the gun-control groups. I don’t mind that, but why aren’t they being as critical of the gun-control groups? Those groups have official ideological agendas.”

Some more information on the Shaneen Allen case, and how it could play out in other, similar, cases. I wonder if she will lose her 2nd Amendment rights though?

How Philadelphia woman's N.J. gun case could affect up to 100 similar cases | NJ.com

Shaneen Allen accepted pre-trial intervention, a kind of probation which would allow her to avoid jail time, since she met a new set of criteria for out-of-state gun owners to get leniency. But hers is just one of about 100 cases that could be affected across New Jersey, authorities said.

Teen Jailed for Zero Tolerance Offense, Starved for 36 Hours - Hit & Run : Reason.com

I previously wrote about Alexander Chier, a Pewaukee, Wisconsin, 17-year-old who was disciplined by his high school for smoking a cigarette. This caused the police to search his vehicle, where they found his hunting rifle. Since the weapon was technically on school grounds, he was suspended and arrested.

Chier spoke with me via e-mail to relate his side of the story. There are no key details in dispute; even so, it's hard not to sympathize with the teenager, who was jailed for a night and denied food for 36 hours, according to his account.
