One might wonder if there is such a thing as ammunition shelf life. It's a good concern to have, as ammunition should only be used if one can rely on it to be safe.

Granted, one might opine that if a person keeping sufficient ammunition to worry about expiring is probably not doing enough point shooting!.

Back in the late Nineties, a friend had some ammo from a recently deceased relative that was WWII through early Sixties vintage, including 45acp, 303 British, 30-06, 8mm Mauser and 7.62 Nato. A few thousand rounds total. It had been stored in a less than ideal (a touch humid) basement mostly in original cardboard boxes. We fired it off over maybe 1999-2002. No failures.

Oh, and I fired off some 7.62 from that lot (maybe 200 rounds) about 5 years ago. I had forgotten it in the back of my safe until then. Anyway it was probably around 50 years old then. It ran just fine.

Ammunition can last many decades if kept cool and dry. Sealed primers and necks can also help extend shelf life. Ultimately, over time the primers and powder will break down. Proper storage is key.

I've shot 1942 surplus M2 ball. Worked fine. Corrosive primers, no biggie.

I have surplus Malaysian 7.62 ammo head stamped 68 stored in who what kind of environment before I got it that still went bang the last time I shot it. also had some 15yr old .22 that had no problems. All my ammo is stored in a dry cool basement, and when I receive a new ammo order I let it sit out before loading into sealed ammo cans to let the water vapor evaporate out.
