Ok, so I'm just curious. If there was a total govt. collapse what about "currency"? Would the dollar become highly inflated and still used? Would gold or silver come back into circulation? Would it become a barter economy? Would a new fiat currency be established? Or would it be a combo of them all? I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on this what if.
What if grasshoppers carried machine guns, would birds still fuck with them?![]()
ehh?
I feel like the dollar would still be around for a very short time after the gov't collapse, but after that, it will be a barter society. Food for bullets, tools and goods people need to survive will be traded. Gold and silver would eventually come back, but I think that would be more of trade to those traveling outside of the country. Your immediate area would likely be a barter society.

The dollar will be toast without a Govt to back it. I do believe most other contries will crumble first though. China might survive at first, but billions of people starving will make short work of their Govt.
I imagine here, at first it will be semi orderly(except the cities), then once despair sets in, it will be groups banding together to protect what they have. I see bands of rogue "mad max" types looting and pilaging what ever than can.It will be a shoot first ask questions later type environment.

You see in this world there's two kinds of people my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig?
I suspect that all currencies will fall like dominos. European, South American, Africa/Middle East, Asia, then the Australian, Great Britan, and North American. Not sure about GB as their currency is still based on the Sterling Pound but it is such a small country that it may tumble just like the rest of them. I suspect that they would be OK for awhile but not have any international commerce as it takes two to rumble and thus the country will also fail. As for the US, don't forget that Fort Knox is still full of gold so it gives the US (or whatever replaces this government which I believe will be based on the Constitution and BoRs with some minor changes) a place to start to build again. Unfortunately, hyper-inflation is a given. Mass casualties, numbering in the billions worldwide due to hunger/famine and loss of medicine, threat of warfare, ...... Although we are considered the "bread basket" of the world, we are not prepared to manage all this farm/ranch land by non-coventional means.
I also suspect that each state (multi state territories - some states can not survive alone) would publish their own currencies based upon the commodities that they have and that is what will be used in these states. For localities/enclaves, it will probably be barter. Food for services and vice versa. In interstate and intrastate commerce, I suspect that precious metals/jewels will be king followed by individual state currencies until a new government is in place.
I can live without a house (although I have a place to go far from here), I can live without transportation, but I will eventually need food for survival as I don't have the room to farm/ranch all that I need, and I grow alot of my own staples. While I have many talents, I do not know if they will be enough. Fishing, hunting, farming, ranching will be on order for survival along with your ability to defend what is yours.
Armegeddon then Bartertown........Those that are prepared to defend themselves their families and their property will survive (if their property can sustain them), as for the others, it is a pretty grim outlook for them..... (won't be much use for a stock portfolio manager).
Just my .02 cents worth.
A pure democracy operates by direct majority vote of the people. When an issue is to be decided, the entire population votes on it; the majority wins and rules. A republic differs in that the general population elects representatives who then pass laws to govern the nation.
I think guns and ammo would be the new money.
Stock up.![]()
The first thing the Government will do is consolidate all of the gold.
There are 8100 tons in Fort Knox, and what is held within the banking system will be consolidated before the second sunrise.
Pre-positioned plans are already in place. Don't ask me how I know.
Paper currency will be worthless. Confederate money ring a bell, anyone?
Underground economy will be barter system - buy spares, you'll need them.
Biggest problem will arise from human hordes evacuating population centers.
When it comes, you need to be able to get below ground with an escape hole and you will need a team of friends who can shoot to be able to stand watch.

Since the thread is currency:
I have bags of silver quarters and dimes. They are a known weight and minted. They are also small enough to be used as currency in an environment where an oz. of silver could be worth hundreds of dollars in current purchasing power.
I don't believe in bartering with ammo. It just comes right back at you.
