Ok so as the title says, today I broke my extractor.
A little back story. Scored the SPR on a trade with a buddy. Took it out and on my first shot, I attempted to cycle it, and the bolt would only travel about half twist. Well, I grrrd it (which is what I think actually broke the extractor). The round I shot was a M118 LCLR mil round, not some hokey hand load. The rifle had just come out of its case, and the ammo hadn't been sitting in the sun.
The good thing is, my buddy is paying to fix the bolt, he felt bad that it failed on the first shot, the bad thing is, I have no clue what was the cause of this.
Now I know sometime when people put together a hand load that is to hot and has too much pressure it will jam up the bolt, but I wouldnt think M118 LCLR would do this. Any clues.....
Let Me Think.....
If you had a blueprint of the .308 Winchester reamer, as well as the 7.62 NATO reamer, you would clearly see why you should not fire 7.62 NATO cartridge in a precision bolt gun chambered in .308 Winchester.
The throats, headspacing, and other dimensions are far enough apart from one another to cause problems.
(yes, I have the blue prints)

Thank you very much for your reply. I was under the assumption that 7.62 could go through .308 with no problem, but not the other way around.
So a few more question for you. Is there other damage that I could have done to the rifle with the M118 LCLR.
What fatory loaded ammo shoots well through this stick? And do you have a suggestion for hand loads?

.308 is safe to shoot in a 7.62 chambering, not the other way around.Originally Posted by Giest
I don't think you've damaged the rifle (other than the extractor) with firing one round.
Federal Gold Medal Match shoots very well in any well made bolt action chambered for .308 Winchester. Of course there are other offerings available and it's a matter of sampling some from the various (reputable) manufacturers, such as Remington, etc.
Handloading - Due to liability exposure, I cannot suggest a particular bullet, primer, powder, case, COAL, combination. Look at the link below for essential products for the precision shooter.

So I need to make a correction on my first post. It is not a SPR it is a PBR chambered in .308. So I guess I will just replace the extractor. Give her a good cleaning, and go shoot again.
One question on replacing the extractor. Is that something that I should be able to do, or is that something a smith should do?
Let Me Think.....
You can do it. It's pretty straightforward. I would suggest youtube for a visual guide.
