    My first FAL

I just traded one of my deer rifles for a FAL and was hoping sombody could tell me what I had. I know very little about the rifle besides what the previous owner told me and what i have read on this site . The rifle is marked - L1A1 Sporter cal. 308,Receiver made by IMBEL-Brazil,Imported by CAI St.Alb VT. It has a folding charging handle, the mags are inch, there are sand cuts in the bolt, and the stock is a ugly black plastic with a odd ugly thumb hole buttstock. I hope this is enough info until I can figure out how to post pics. Any replies are appreciated.

Don't buy one of those "franken FALs" from Century. There are plenty of nice FALs out there!

Don't feel too bad about it. At least you got one with an Imbel upper. Those are some of the best uppers out there.

If you want to get rid of the ugly buttstock - and stay legal - you can collect the needed 7 US made 922r parts (this is not just any 7 parts - do some reading on this). Go over to FAL Files and they will school you no charge.

Nice...I'm starting to get the inch gun itch. With the imbel receiver you have a nice set up. Get a replacement stock set and you're good to go. Do you have a pic?

Are you trying to get banned right out of the gate?
You are not correct as these type Century's are all pre-1994 and any restrictions have sunsetted along with the Brady (1994 Crime) bill.

The kit could be British, Australian, or a mix of the two.

It is not preban, it is a kit build made after 1989 and therefore requires the 7 US parts to return it to normal configuration, The 94 AWB has absolutely zero to do with it. If it has the Bell and Carlson butthole stock, you either need a new lower or a new pistol grip screw (welded to the lower) to put a regular pistol grip on it- Century cut those short to fit the butthole stock.

It should be a good rifle once any small problems (if any) are hammered out. I'd suggest you check the headspace before shooting it unless the previous owner already did so.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO......in theory, I cannot knock the butthole stock off my preban Mak90 and attach a regular butt stock? Ummmm, ok. And if I do....it somehow magically turns into an assault rifle per the Alphabet Soup? I really wish weapons would quit playing with the Lucky Charms. From sittin back here.....it sounds like this mentality is being applied to FAL's.

At NO point am I advocating any violations....and I will show ALL my weapons are completely legal....but wtf happened to people being protected on their property? I can drink my ass into a stupor and drive all over my private property....so long as I do not travel on public roads. Why do weapons have to be more difficult?

And I look forward to replacing that UGLY stock with a Ironwood Blk Walnut set up....
