    five seven for home defense?

Hello first post here. I own a FS2000 and want to buy the 5.7 twins (ps90 & fiveseven) eventually. my main worries is home invasions and my bullpup probably would be over kill inside the house repelling invaders with overpenatration. does the five seven round fragment inside the body or clean thru? thanks

Unsure, but suspect the 5.7 round would over penetrate. Would recommend the weapon you are most accurate with. Preferably a nice compact shotgun. Oh yeah.

The chance of you ever having to repel multiple invaders in your home is so astronomically remote.

Visit Ballistic gelatin test results : 5.7x28mm (PS90 and 5.7) heavy clothing test - THR for a pretty damn good
    5.7 ballistic test.

They are some pretty remarkable firearms to own. Unfortunately, for home defense in the hands of someone who isn't well trained, odds are likely you will miss
and may wind up hurting someone in your family or royally upsetting your neighbors.

I have the same issue with shotguns and people using buckshot or inappropriate ammunition for home defense. A shotgun is great for clearing a room when you don't have to worry about who you are aiming at.

Have you taken a look at the FNP-45/T. It has that wow factor that you seem to be looking for, and it fires a variety of ammunition that is perfect for home defense. The FNP-45 is accurate, and great buy financially.

Nope, not at all. SS195/192 is designed to stay in soft targets, and usually does.

With respect to over penetration from the Five-seveN pistol it depends upon the ammo used as well as the media punctured. On YouTube you will find a number of tests showing various rounds of ammo for the Five-seveN and its characteristics when shot into gel, through sheet rock, steel plates, etc. SS197, SS192, EA's ProtecTOR I and II are all rounds that you may consider testing for home defense.

Use of non FN factory sanctioned ammunition can and will result in the voidance of the warranty on the 5.7X28mm platforms manufactured by FNH.

5.7 has no more chance of over penetration then other standard pistol caliber rounds. You miss with any caliber, and it's going to put things beyond your target in harms way. No way around it. Even rounds that would only penetrate 6-8" in a human still have no issue punching through building materials like drywall, plywood, vinyl siding etc. Shot placement, and know what's beyond your target. Stop worrying about trying to find a round that doesn't "overpenetrate".

I don't think the OP asked anything in regards to his warranty. He wants to know penetration characteristics of the 5.7 ammunition.

Rounds like the 5.7 and even the .233/5.56 have a design that inherently resists over penetration. The high velocity, low weight bullets will generally lose most of their velocity and tumble/fragment in soft media such as drywall or tissue.

That is not true. Someone should always be worried about over penetration, a ricochet, a miss, shot placement. Ghia take a look at CORBON - Glaser.

5.7 is not a standard/conventional pistol caliber round. It is naturally predisposed by design to penetrate. The above linked ballistic tests speak for themselves. The round will attempt to limit penetration, but you have to be certain and well practiced with the type of ammunition you are using.
