Steel-Cased Ammo *Update with Word from FNH*

Has anyone run any steel-cased ammunition through their FNX's? I've heard some guns will eat it like nothing and some won't fire more than a round at a time of it. I'll look into the warranty implications of it later as well. I'm also interested in the fact that a lot of it is now polymer coated instead of laquer coated, which may help the gumming up (though I've got no clue if it will or not).

The reason I ask is that I'm about to pick up a couple of 20-round boxes and give them a try through my NATO-chambered AR15 this weekend. I was told by a gunsmith that, generally speaking, if you have a chrome-lined chamber it will run the steel-cased ammo and if you don't, running a magazine or two of steel and then going back to brass will likely result in a jam.

I've shot steel cased w/ no problems at all. I shoot what is cheapest, most available and I don't clean my internals. (Just keep it lubed and very rarely do a quick swipes with a bore brush & CLP.)

    I haven't had a single malfunction yet.

Glad to hear it- I'll pick up a box or two today and give it a shot on Saturday, see how it goes. I clean my guns to the point that it sometimes borderlines on overcleaning them lol, so I'm not worried about the ammo 'shooting dirtier' or anything.

I generally don't shoot steel cased ammo, not because I am worried about it no feeding/damaging stuff, etc. but because I reload. Some guys might reload steel cases but I won't. I will shoot whatever is cheapest, as long as the casing is brass.

I have yet to shoot any steel out of my fnx, but I did shoot a fair amount of my fnp and never had any problems though.

i put some steel thorugh it with zero malfunctions, but i will not shoot it again. it was very dirty ammo and the smell of it was just awful. i will pay $1-$2 more a box because of personal preference.

Was it Wolf, Silver Bear, or Brown Bear? Those russian brands are corrosive as all get out. I bought 2000 rds of 9mm in Wolf ammo during the ammo shortage about 2 years ago. I still have about 400 rds left of it but I am with you. I will spend the extra couple bucks for brass ammo. I always have had decent luck with SGammo.com or ammunitiontogo.com for bulk brass ammo.

I think 9mm is cheap enough right now for me to run brass pretty much exclusively. I'm going to lube my AR15 up really well though and see if it'll run the steel stuff. It wouldn't yesterday but it was also really dry, as it had been sitting up for a couple months untouched and I just pulled it from the closet at the last second to take it out with the FNX.

I've put Herter's, Cabela's store brand, through my FNX-9 & FNP-45. Good stuff. Even won a tactical pistol comp using it.

Thanks axx, I'm going to give brown bear a shot soon. Nobody stocks it here it appears so I'm going to order a hundred rounds or so from the internet. What buffer tube do you have?

Also, I'm probably going to go ahead and give steel cased ammo a try in the FNX as well. If it functions, I see no reason not to save the little extra money since I don't currently reload. I'm not sure I've ever seen steel cased ammo around here in 9mm before but maybe Academy will have it.
