The best stuff out there IMO is Winchester Ranger T, and Hornady FTX Critical defense. They are both amazing rounds. I mostly recommend the FTX for shorter barreled and pocket pistols though.

In 9mm Federal HST in 124gr. +P or 147gr. standard pressure are really the new best.
The Winchester Ranger T and Speer Gold Dots are also very good.
Federal Hyda-Shok and Remington Golden Sabers are now obsolete types.
Ball ammo is for practice at the range.

In order to answer the question of which brand and type of self defence ammo to use you need to know the location of where you will be defending and other factors? An urban area, rural area, house, apartment, family members in the home, clothing worn by attacker, weight/size of the attacker, season, etc.
I assume you live in MI and the round is 9mm so a light grain, HP 115gr or 124gr that does not clog for apartment/house with family no +P or FMJ.
A house that has the people away from the attacker then a combination of HP 115gr +P+ or 124gr +P and FMJ 124gr or 147gr.
Outside summer HP 115gr +P+, 124gr +P or 147gr +P and FMJ 124gr or 147gr.
Outside winter HP 124gr (+P or +P+) or 147gr (+P or +P+) and FMJ 124gr or 147gr.
The purpose of the combination of HP, FMJ, different grains and (+P or +P+) is penatration through barriers/clothing and in case the HP bullets fail to expand. An added benefit is to lighten the weapon in some combinations.
PM me if you want information on brands and types of bullets to use. Please provide some info on the self defence requirements and caliber.
Cheers,
In reality, overpenetration in regards to home situtations is over empahasized. You want a round that will penetrate 8-12+ (preferably 11-12+) inches, and to be frank any round capable of doing such, will make swiss cheese out of all standard building materails (save shooting hard objects like toliets, thick studs, etc). Know your target, and what lies beyond, and make your shot hit the target.
The only round of the three the OP mentioned that's worthwhile is the SXT. EXtreme shock, is nothing more than ExTreme marketing. Frangible pistol calibers such as the ones they design and make don't penetrate enough, and when they do, it's because they act like ball ammunition, leaving minimal damage behind.
FBI protocols are what you're looking for. You want a good round. Find one that meets those standards, will cycle in your gun, and is affordable. The affordable part is subjective to the person, but if you're buying your HP's in 20-25 round boxes from your local gun store, you're not getting a good value. You can buy 50rd LEO boxes of popular, well tested SD ammunution for normally the cost of one 25 round box.
www.ammunitiontogo.com is one place to find such boxes..
