    40 cal to 9mm Conversion

As the title says, yay or nay?

If yay, what all would I have to do to convert? Just the barrel and magazines or would there be more?

    Thanks for your time!

Sell the .40 buy the 9mm.

    : )

In my pea-sized intellect it's either the 9mm or .45.

    YMMV.

I own both the FNX-9 SS and FNX-40 SS so I decided on a whim to see if I could convert the FNX-40 to a 9mm and here is what I found. The FNX-40 mag will not accept 9mm ammo the bullets just pop-out so no go but the FNX-9 mag will not only fit into the FNX-40 but will load a snap cap into the barrel of the FNX-40. The locations inside seem to match-up so it may be possible to use a FNX-9 mag in the FNX-40 so the next question is will a conversion barrel load properly. I do not have a barrel but I am guessing yes if the new barrel is made correctly and after market barrels can be out of spec and need modification. I was shocked when the FNX-40 held the 9mm mag perfectly ( note: FNX pistols on earlier versions had mag well issues and mine is a late 2011 or early 2012).

Boo. If you have the 40, the ammo is only a little more. Expensive than 9. Counter to amsdorks claim... 40 is a viable caliber. .. but if you want to step it up, converting to 357sig will trump the 45 any day of the week and twice on sunday. If I wasn't tapping on a smart phone right now, I'd give more proof, but if you want to dispute this, I'll talk more tomorrow on the subject. If you want a plinker, get a 22 pistol like the mosquito. If its for competition, a new gun is in order in 9mm for reliability sake. If you want to practe on the cheap, the laser dry fire systems are amazing.

So I did go ahead and buy the conversion from 40 to 9mm for a number of reasons, but have 2 questions for the group.

I know I need new mags, but does anyone know where I can get an fnp 9 mag catch/release online? Also, do I need a new recoil spring and if so thoughts on where to find? The 9mm barely held in the 40 mag and while I was able to put a few rounds done range with the new barrel I had some feed and or ejection issues. I'd really like to make the 9 work as the ammo cost is supplimented by buying in bulk with family, while the 40 is just me. Don't get me wrong, when push comes to shove I enjoy the 40 immensely.

    Thanks all

Did you try using 9 millimeter magazines?

Waiting for them to arrive but had to try out the ported barrel at least once.

I do not know the design of their barrel but I can tell you it may not work right. here is why.

The mags and frame are different dimensions. The 40 is a hair wider. (mags in 9 might fall out) Then on the slide the recoil guide is different and the rear face around the FP hole area are different dimensions so is the extractor dimension from the firing pin hole. Some of this might be able to be engineered to fix through the barrel but other parts will not.

    You want a 9 I would suggest buying a 9.
