Magpul, Eotech XPS2-2, & 3x Aimpoint Rail Fit!!

So I was a little worried about my rail length, thus the reason for the older post and all the questions. Like most fellas, I hate buying toys I can't use! But things ended up way better than expected, though it took a tiny mod to get there! The tricky thing about the Magpul Sights are the molded rail clamps. Unlike other sight clamps that have expanding sides, the Magpul MBUS do not expand or widen, and must be slid on from the front of the rail. Since the sling mount is just tall enough to keep you from doing this without a bit of work, I included what I did to get things settled in.

The MBUS sites, though polymer, are solidly built, Just as the stock on the FS or a Glock. I wasn't sure about the lack of locking ability in the up position, but after installing, trials, sighting and shooting, I love these sights! They work well with the FS, function and look better than factory. Plus the Price is Killer!

A good polymer will not melt easily when subjected to higher temps. In fact, as you will see in the pictures half way through the post, the light mod I did with a Dremel cutoff wheel didn't harm the sight a bit. No melting whatsoever, sanded particles only, a breeze to work with.

I removed my barrel housing to better handle the job. In order to install the MBUS sights you will need to remove the front assembly screw holding on the rail to the housing. The front screw is about 2 inches behind the sling loop. The rear screw is directly in line with the rear portion of the rail. I removed both ( may not be necessary) due to tilt or impingement concern.

Using a flat head screw driver, I applied a light twist in order to carefully lift the rail. This can be done by hand, but its tough when one hand pulls and the other needs to feed the sights on the rail.

I have a tendency to jump ahead on projects I am exited about, do yourself a favor and slide the rear site on first, BEFORE the front. This sounds like a no brainer, but I forgot to do it twice in my hurry to make sure my gear would fit the rail!

In order to keep as much rail space as possible for this project, I wanted the MBUS forward sight locked on the first available slot. This is an issue as the FS200 as the sling mount will get in the way and not settle properly if the sight is that far forward. Most may not need to do the following mod. I use a magnifier with my Eotech and needed the space. Alternatively, you could mount the sight in reverse, hanging the front over the barrel slightly. This would eliminate the need to modify the sight, but would also make the sight more susceptible to damage.

Below is a photo of the sanded areas. This mod does NOT cut through the entire lower rail section, as that could weaken the sight. I only removed enough to ensure the sight fit over the sling mount without binding. I also angled the rear sanded section in order to make removing the sight easier. My first attempt was a perfect slot, looked great, but the flat sanded end sitting against the sling mount was near impossible to slide off. which gave me busted knuckles. Thus the angle.

Below is a photo of the Front MBUS siting flush against the mount.

Below are pics of the MBUS sites installed on my rifle. Folded. And deployed. Sweet!

Another concern with the MBUS sites was height, a bit more than others sights like Troy, or MI. I have an Aimpoint 3X magnifier on a Larue “push & fold to side” QD mount. Clearance was not only perfect with the mag up. But works with the mag folded no problem. The Larue mount can be installed to tilt to either side, combined with the MBUS easy flip sights is a huge plus for lefties! All I have to do is push forward on the magnifier and down on the backup sights to fold the magnifier and deploy the rear sight at the same time.

I located the rear sight as far back as possible on the rail. The Larue Mount will sit flush against the sight, so there is no wasted rail!

I picked up the new Eotech XPS2-2 Halo sight because it was a bit shorter than my 553. While the 553 fit, the Buttons were impossible to push together to turn off. The same was true with the XPS, though at least possible. This was the reason for pushing the rear backup site as far back as possible, and notching the front sight to overlap the sling mount. With this setup, I can move the Eotech forward a space and reach both buttons with ease!

Did I mention the MBUS Co-witness perfectly! Let me know what you guys think. We are going back to playing with the tri-rail area next!

I've shot a few 90's, but I don't own one myself. I can say that the XPS version of the Eotech is deffinately my favorite based on its short length. I do wish they made one with buttons on the side for magnifiers in the XPS format. No luck so far. Hopefully someone with more 90 experience can chime in and help you out. If not, head over to that section of the forum and post the question there.

This is awesome ... I have the 4x flip to side mag and was trying to figure out how to get everything on the rail ... going to have to go back and see if I can make this work ... the 553 did fit you said just impossible to get to the buttons?

    Thanks again,

    Tony

EOTech does make different models with the control buttons on the left side of the optic for these type of situations.
XPS models have buttons in the rear and EXPS models have the buttons on the side.
The 553 together with the 555 has the buttons on the rear but the 556 & 557 have the buttons on the side.

The issue becomes a bit more complicated when folding battle sights come into play. The space (specially towards the rear) will depend on the magnifier and its mounting solution. You have to remember that whenever a scope or magnifier is used there is a need for eye relief (the space between your eye and the eye piece or ocular lense). This eye relief is a must and will determine how far back or forward the magnifier is installed on the railing.

In my case, with proper cheek weld positioning and using a EOTech FTS 2 gen magnifier does not allow me the space for a rear folding BUIS (circled in red) but it certainly leaves ample space towards the front part of the railing.

I will try on Troy's BUIS from my SIG556 just to see how what kind of cheek weld positioning it leaves me with as an option.
