    Prototype “BMF” Anti Tri-Rail - Round 3

After a few Pm's and some good friendly intel concerning our second attempt at a custom Anti Rail fore grip, we finished up our third.
    Priorities were:
Folding hand grip with built in pressure switch instead of simple on /off switch.
Shorter Light base compared to G2 surefire mod, & tuck the light closer to the barrel.
Adding a laser to the lower instead of the top rail idea.
Keeping things as factory as possible.

Below is the comparison photos of project2 vs 3. The hand grip has been push back a quarter inch for the new Laser light Combo. Version 2 used a push button only NCstar light (very Low output). V3 used 2 A123 Batterries and pushes 150 lumens.

We used a XP6 Laserlight combo. 80 bucks from ebay. Chosen for overall cost and material. Composite plastics, verses aluminum. After quite a bit of cutting and sanding, we managed to keep it much closer to the barrel assembly.

Below are cutaway pics to show how we assembled the finished prototype. The hand grip mounts to spacers then an aluminum plate that fits inside the grip. By sanding the XP6 rail grip down, we could mount it closer to the grip. tapping new screw holes for keeping things sturdy.

The upside is a tighter fit, more asthetic look, anda bit more user friendly as this unit has a selector switch for light, laser, and light $ laser combo. The downside is that the casing must be removed to replace the batteries.

That is very nice. Very nice indeed.

When are you going to offer it as a kit? (IE: The plate and the spacers with the forward grip and what/where to cut?)

Or are you going to offer this as a service to cut existing hand guards?

I am looking for a Green laser with light setup, and really like what you have done. (The red laser does not show up well during the day.)

Thanks for the work, and the ideas. (You really are holding nothing back on this, and anyone with the time and parts/materials could build this up off what you have posted.) I really like that the stock look of the rifle is not destroyed with your idea. (The tri-rail looks like something I'd see on an AR, not that that's s bad thing, but not what this rifle has going for it style wise.)

    Thanks for the compliments,
For now, we are simply experimenting. We don't mind showing what we do, because many forum members could do these mods themselves, and bring great ideas of their own to the table. This is our third go round with the rail light and laser grip combo mod. Each time gets a little cleaner, user friendly, and more practical. We are switching to an ultra short launcher assembly next. Hopefully keeping the light and laser. The folding grip may be sacrificed.

If and when, we ever decide to actually make a unit for sale, we would need to test the units heavily first. Meaning offering big discounts to forum members for trial use and feedback. Once we had everything finalized we would first sponsor this forum, then offer the item for sale. The FS2000 is about a year new to us, so we have a lot of learning to go. All ideas, tips, and improvements are always appreciated.

Let me know if you need a tester.

I found a green laser/light combo that is very close. The switch on yours is better for the FS2k however, as it's on the lower back side of the laser part, and the one I've found has a "streamlight" type rocker switch that goes from side to side, behind the light. (Would require a slot cut out of the hand guard to use, but it negates the need for a pressure switch.)

I do like the folding short post/grip, and how you carved a path for the wire so it would fold up neat and tidy. (If I used the green setup, that wire would not exist however.)

I have a question. When you sanded down the mount for the light, and then just screwed it to the handguard, was there any consideration for battery space, or other electronics in the unit that got into the way?

Is there a way to create a "1911/pictatiny" rail on the barrel assembly, and then slide the light onto that using the stock light's rail clamp? Then notch the stock hand guard so it goes around the light/laser combo? (This would leave any light you use intact, and able to be used on other weapons too.) But it does modify a much more expensive part of the FS2k.)

Or I suppose it could be slotted into the "stock" of the rifle. (Just under the barrel, on the stock between the barrel assembly, and the hand guard, so lights would be removed by taking off the barrel assy as you do with general take down, then push out the forward hand guard, and then slide a light/laser combo off the new "rail" that is cut into that space under the barrel there.

I'm going to have to pull the rifle apart, and see how hard this would be, or if it is even possible.

Thanks again for sharing the ideas. If I figure out anything, I'll post up some photos.

    Adjuster,

While I fully recommend taking your rifle down and disassembling it in order to clean it and become familiar with your weapon, I wouldn't be the one to suggest modifying a stock as you have thought of doing via a weaver rail. We have played around with the fore grip, because a replacement can be purchased for about twenty dollars through Brownings. This allows us the freedom of “working” a replacement grip a leaving most other things original. Nothing on the FS2000 is cheap! Including just about any replacement part you may need. A hammer pack can run around $400 bucks. I would hate to imagine the replacement cost of an integrated stock assembly because a MOD went bad.

One of the impressive things about the FS2000 would be its modularity. A simple push of the aluminum slide, and the entire front barrel and housing slide out. The fore grip can then drop down for easy switching or replacement, and the bolt carrier, firing pin assembly, and recoil spring, all slide out the front as a single unit. Pull off the rear plate cover and the entire hammer pack drops out!

Once you have your weapon apart, you will quickly appreciate the fine details involved in the engineering process. A good engineer makes complicated mechanics look simple, designs them for easy maintenance, and focuses on longevity and functionality. FNH did a great job with this rifle, and it has quickly became a personal favorite.

With that being said, the guys and myself at the shop are definitely NOT FNH engineers. You had asked about shaving down the light housing and battery swap. On this version, it sucks. You not only have to take down the housing cover, but you will need remove the four mounting screw to drop housing out to replace the battery.

This being our third prototype. I focused on keeping things more streamline. The earlier “anti tri-rail v2” actually uses a rail. If you look back in earlier posts, this section, you will see what I mean. The new units laser added a quarter of an inch total height. While that doesn't sound like much, it makes a huge difference on the finished product! By shaving the light housing and eliminating the rail, we actually shortened the unit by almost a half inch total. This is because the plate used to mount the grip, traveled the entire length on versions v1 and v2. Using the original housing as a base will keep you from dinging up your frame. But it has its limitations, and space is a factor. Also the unit we used is switch and pressure activated, not one or the other, though it took a bit of wiring with the original pressure switch and a AA Mag light conversion button. We will have to post a picture of the actual switch install. The original photos only have a small bore hole on the left hand side near the trigger curve where the button is located.

After we play with the 37mm launcher idea, we will probably start working on v4. I think two smaller separate light assemblies with a centered, in-line laser, will get us were we need to be on keeping things more streamline and overall more compact. Kinda wish I had thought of it earlier. V4 will also have a hidden shorty grip, that will drop out of the fore grip frame and can be removed to insert a pivot style bi pod. Instead of having a full handle to grab (often raising your center of gravity by lowering the hand hold), the stubby grip fits the lower palm and will allow the hand the maintain a “shotgun” grip. This is similar to the original design, but the short grip and light rear curve when folded forward will allow the user to simply “hook” the palm into place and assist in pulling the weapon into the shoulder notch.

Working with manufacturers on parts for laser light combos has been a big issue. Many companies, loads of imitations and variables, questionable craftsmanship. Version 4 will more than likely have a single drop free batter pack and all parts molded from kydex instead of chopping and piecing together other companies products. Once we get something we are truly comfortable with, trust, and folks claim they “gotta have”, we will give producing the units ourselves a shot. Hopefully from all new made products.
