Personally I have found only ONE way to answer a question like that.
Measure or otherwise obtain the INTERNAL measurements of the case, then take construction paper and make a sheet EXACTLY that large. You can then determine your own comfort level. I would suggest at least 1 inch of foam on the perimeter of the weapon. less than that and you risk damage. If you were sending the rifle ON A PLANE or something perhaps 1 inch is too thin.
Oh, and don't forget DIAGONAL case storage. For example, I already had a case and my M4 when disassembled and put in the case diagonal... fit perfect. Try that too.
Again, the sheet of paper works best.
Furthermore, I no longer have cut-outs for magazines in my weapon cases. I store and carry ammo separate. That might not be best for you.
