Gun Firms Fear Army Carbine Fait Accompli
FNH USA spokeswoman Jeanette Hanfling said the company is not granting any interviews until after the completion of Phase One of the competition.
But the company's 2012 product catalog at Shot Show includes the new FN Advanced Carbine. The newest member of the Special Operations Forces Assault Rifle, or SCAR line, "is ready to serve as the U.S. Army's next generation Individual Carbine," according to the catalog.
The new carbine looks very much like the MK 16 SCAR, but there is no information on whether the 14-inch hammer-forged barrel is changeable at the operator level like the MK16.
The advanced carbine features a non-reciprocating charging handle and is slightly lighter than the MK16, weighing in at 7.95 pounds with a loaded 30 round magazine -- a key requirement in the carbine competition.
So, without mag, that would be right about 7 pounds correct?
Interesting with the non-reciprocating charging handle. I bet it has a bayonet lug too.

Anybody got a picture of what this Advanced Carbine looks like? I figured it'd be your normal MK16 SCAR, but it sounds like it's got plenty of changes.

Sounds nice...FN is wasting time. ARMY will not accept a new rifle and the excuse will be because lack of funds. Prob to keep Colt on its toes with a more refined AR?
With all the talk of going to a larger round, I'm wondering if its still chambered for 5.56, or did they go to a 6.8mm?
5.56. The Army was proving the M855A1 ammo for tests, but said the companies could bring in any caliber they wanted.... as long as they brought in the ammo too. Naturally, everybody stuck with 5.56, and several of the multi-caliber guns are not going to be multi-caliber just because the Army was too shortsighted to make that a testing requirement, or grading factor.

Has anyone seen this new rifle yet? Did they have one on display at the SHOT Show?
Thanks! Looks good, only real changes I see are they got rid of some black, changed the sights, and added a bayonet lug. Still don't see how the charging handle is non-reciprocating, but I don't get the fixation with the charging handle.
