If I'm not mistaken FN participates in competition within the frames of USMC Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR) Project. But with what kind of product? Please, advise.
It's a variation on the SCAR-L.
It's pretty eff'n cool too.

Is this the same competition that involved the Land Warrior Rifle(LWRC)?
They want to replace the M249 SAW.

In the field every bad guy that sees the SAW knows what it is and most likely will try to neutralize it first.
With the new IAR concept, means that you have the sustained fire capability of a machine gun from a weapon that does not atract a lot of attention on the battle field.
I found this post about how the open/closed bolt works in the FN IAR:
" Internally a mechanical devive near under the bolt by the chamber that sense the temperture of the chamber and automatically turn the closed bolt gun into a open bolt and back again once the temp goes back to a more acceptable level.....very slick....no electronics, nothing to break, just a mechanical rod that will push back and turn the gun into open bolt for long sustain fire.....talk about impressive.....!!"

Think the standard marine will eventually be issued SCARs, because this the bad guys would eventually learn what these do and target them to some extent since they do stand out a bit from the M16's they are using.
Looks like a heavy barrel for that prolonged full auto fire.
First pic I've seen of one.![]()

If you Aim for Nothing and Shoot, You will Hit It.
The SAW will still be king in a sustained suppression role. Changing mags every 30 rounds (few seconds) sounds like an unrealistic task for that purpose. The weight difference is a big improvement though. A beta C-mag would be useful for this weapon.
I noticed FN has a link for the IAR now http://www.fnhusa.com/mil/products/f...G023&cid=FNC01
