At the Range: 240B General Purpose Machine Gun

The 240B machine gun was developed as a general purpose weapon system, and is currently in use by several branches of the US Armed Forces.

Manufactured by FN Herstal, the 240B is an air-cooled, belt-fed, gas operated system that fires 7.62x51mm rounds from an open bolt. The gun is capable of firing 950 rounds-per-minute, and features a quick-change barrel system for swapping out hardware during heavy strings of fire.

The 240B machine gun replaced the venerable M60 as our general purpose machine gun. Adaptable for many different objectives, the 240B can be mounted to a bipod, tripod, aircraft or vehicle.

    I think I'd rather have a Mk 48 though

This is what I fired on a regular basis when I was in the service.

The C was a coax and didn't have a stock, hand guard, or traditional trigger, but it can still be fired from the hip.

It was the smallest weapon system mounted in the track compared to the .50cal M2s on top of the turret and the 120mm main weapon right next to the coax, but if we had to dismount and ditch the track, we took the coax with us.
Our four man crew became a small fighting squad on foot complete with a SAW in the form of our coax

240Bs are fun. Heavy as hell, but fun. A M240L, now that's my MG. I'd happily hump that sucker all over creation. Wish they'd just replace the M249 with the 240L.
