    M249 spw

Does anyone have any information on the M249 SPW? There is not any printed material on this weapons program from the Army or Marines.

Here is some info from Wikipedia:

    M249 Special Purpose Weapon
This lightweight and shorter version of the M249 is designed to meet USSOCOM special operations forces requirements. The carrying handle, magazine insertion well, and vehicle mounting lug all have been removed to reduce weight. As a result, the SPW cannot be mounted in vehicles or use M16 magazines. Picatinny rails were added to the feed cover and forearm for the mounting of optics, lasers, vertical foregrips, and other M4 SOPMOD kit accessories. The SPW has a detachable bipod. The SPW's lightweight barrel is longer than that of the Para model, giving it a total length of 908 mm (36 in) and a weight of 5.7 kg (13 lb).

    From American Special Ops:
M249 SPW A special version of the M249 designed for use by Special Operations Forces (SOF). Gone are the folding handle, magazine well and vehicle-mounting lug. Newly added are a set of Pictatinny rails for mounting accessories. The SPW features a collapsible buttstock. The SPW's barrel is longer than the M249 Para but shorter than the full-length SAW.

    Thanks Gunner,

Your suggestion to use Google to find information on the M249 SPW is incorrect. There is nothing readily available on the internet regarding this special project from the US Army. The 249 SPW was developed after the last printing of the Army TM and FM and has not been updated with any current information.

Anyone know how to remove the flash hider on the current 14.1" long barrels like in the above photo? There isn't a crush splashier like the older short barrels. Are they silver soldered on?

    Doc,

The Para barrels have left hand threads, 9/16-24 LH. Try turning it the other way. Mine came right off.
