Actually, it works to control the bolt speed in conjunction with the gas pot.

Gas pot: Is a threaded component located in the gas port with a through bore drilled to a specific diameter which is set by the accelerometer reading taken from the weapon mounted unit during qualifying the gun to standard.

For a visual reference of the port and pot:

Been running my M4-2000 can with the gas system on the normal setting (12 oclock) with no malfunctions of any kind. Will this harm the rifle? The owners manual is not very informative on the gas system settings and the use of suppressors. Thanks

Over time it will damage the weapon. You're increasing the wear on the return spring and other parts (and increasing recoil).

Maybe there's a place for an aftermarket adjustable SCAR gas regulator with "regular" and "adverse" (instead of "suppressed")? I'd buy one.
The AR is the rifle for the masses and the SCAR is the rifle for the classes.

Not currently, and nobody has mentioned anything regarding this.
