POST YOUR SCAR'S RANGE RESULTS AND AMMO

Trying to find out what ammo your gun loves is sometimes as hard as trying to find out "what's wrong" with your wife/girlfriend

I always find it a pain in the butt trying to find out which ammo my new gun loves. Actually the FNAR and Sig556 were my two biggest PITA.

Post up your results and which ammo you used(MFG, Grain, groups at what yards, optics). Pictures will greatly help.

Weather was frigid and windy on both my outings.

This was when I had about 500 rounds through my SCAR.

    Prone position
Wind was between 25 and 35 mph today
    Federal 55 grain
    Aimpoint

100 yards Rapid Fire (this is my favorite group since it was cheaper ammo and run fairly fast)

    200 yards 5 shot group

    200 yards 5 shot group 2

    200 yards 5 shot group 3

    200 yards 5 shot group 4

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This (below) was when I had a little over 7440 rounds through my SCAR.

This was after 380 rounds were run through it (for that range session). Still running the 2moa Aimpoint and now a 3X mag.

    200 yards off a pack
60 grain Hornady VMax and Win 748

    12 rounds

    10 rounds

I now have a little more than 10,600 rounds through my SCAR and have found a few other rounds that run well. The 75 gr PRVI match gives me moa or better. So far my best groups have come with my hand loads of Sierra 69gr MKs and Win 748. I have some 77gr MKs on the way to test.

This SCAR has now successfully and humanely taken hogs, coyotes, javelina, deer, rabbits, and a fox (I'm sure I'm missing something, but it's taken a good amount of game). For those that don't like a 223 for hunting - I use good ammo and I've still never lost an animal or even come close. I also use a 270wsm and am well educated in what bullet and energy is necessary for specific animals at every distance I hunt. This has provided me an excellent chance to study what different calibers do (terminal ballistics), without all of the nonsense that we so often see online.

looks like the hornady 60gr is a winner. damn near 1 ragged hole

I am still in the break in stage(due to the weather). I figure 500rnds should be the sweet spot. Don't know if I will get to 10k plus any time soon, but who knows. Do you notice any wear on your receiver or other internals?

    First range session

I took my SCAR out for the first time on 27 Nov 10. After zeroing at 25m using a standard M16A2 zero target, I put this one out to 50m and burned two magazines fairly quickly. I first fired 20 rds of Lake City M855 (62 grn), followed by 30 rds of Fiocchi .223 Rem 62 grn. This was done without optics, and I was shooting a bit low. The weather was about 40 degrees and sunny, with no wind.

Seems like the Scar shoots most ammo really well. I tried to get my Sig556 to go SubMoa, but I ended up selling it as most groups where around 3" I did get good results with Hornady 67gr 223 tap, but that stuff is $15. a box.

I do see some wear in places, but nothing bad. I have a couple of ARs with high round counts and the SCAR is definitely wearing better. Nothing wrong with my ARs, but they do wear differently.

I initially wondered if the rails that the carrier rides on would hold up, but as far as I can tell they look about like they did new. I've been sort of rough on the SCAR now so it has a few scars, but overall it is really holding up well. I have no complaints. I do worry a little about barrel life. So far everything is fine, but if I find a way to shoot out a barrel I could end up in a bad position, where on an AR I can just pop on a new barrel with ease. (not beating up the SCAR, I really like mine - we just need more aftermarket options)

I reinstalled the 2-7x32 Nikon Monarch scope on its American Defense quick detach mount, due to it having shot loose last time (which was my fault....long story). Today, I decided to do all shooting with a box of 50 Black Hills .223/69 gr. "MatchKing HP" which I had on hand, to see if a heavier bullet made any big difference. On the first and second range sessions, I used mostly 55 gr. stuff. It was breezy today and sort of gusty here in N. Calif.; at times the wind was light and other times maybe 10-15 knots, mostly blowing right at the shooting benches so it was not a crosswind. However the heavier bullet was probably helpful in the wind anyway. The air temp was around 58.

These targets are 8 inches wide, or one inch between each circle. Shot from bench rest, with the forearm resting on their little carpeted wood blocks. No lead sleds, tripod, or anything like that.

The first picture, 0325, was my 50 yard sight-in. The first rounds were in the black, so the tightening and remount of the scope did not throw off initial impact too much. I had to dial in some "right" for windage but left it a little high to see what happened at 100 yards.

    50 Yard Sight In:

The second picture was sighting in at 100 yards. You can see I needed more right windage but not a huge amount. I overcorrected it and I dialed it back left a bit for my last three rounds or so. Everything looked good in elevation.

    100 Yard Sight In:

The last picture was my final group of the day at 100 yards. I really took my time with these three shots. Needless to say, I'm really, really happy with this, as it is close to, or actually, 1 MOA. This is with the scope dialed all the way to 7x. My aging eyes could use more but it is quite adequate at 7x.

    Final 100 yd. group:

Just to burn off the last three rounds, I aimed at the black dot at the bottom right edge of this last target/picture; much harder for me to put crosshairs on at that distance but still a nice group (circled with magic marker).

The SCAR has now had about 170 rounds total down range; 120 of various factory loads, and 50 of 69gr. Zero failures to fire or feed except twice caused by me when I got my left thumb in the way of the cycling bolt handle. I'm getting used to the ergonomics so that is not an issue. There is a slight but noticeable difference in noise and recoil with 69 gr. vs. 55 gr. but it is not at all bothersome.

In my non-expert opinion, the SCAR trigger feels a little stiff, but various reviews report it at around 5 or 6 lbs. It has a single, very crisp break and no "set point" or take-up point that you can feel at all. You can squeeze it part way, though, and hold it partly loaded while you steady your aim, once you start getting used to it. It is, after all, a military trigger and no way is going to trip unless you intend for it to. It'll get better as it wears in. I'm not one to mess with a trigger assembly so I'm leaving it alone.

As far as I am concerned, the FN SCAR 16S has plenty of inherent accuracy. If you are a lurker or a newbie on this Forum, contemplating the purchase of a SCAR 16S, I encourage you to step up and get one.

good to hear the scar is holding up well.

Seeing the scar is going on it's second birthday, I think it will be a short time before aftermarket stuff hits the shelves. It took the AR a decade or so before aftermarket Items became cheaply available. Plus the amount of new members on here with scars have greatly increased recently(including me).
