    Thinking about a SCAR 16

I own a few handguns and shotguns but have never owned a rifle. I have been researching rifles for the last few months and have narrowed my search down to the SCAR and the Robinson XCR. I am going to start with a 5.56 but may eventually buy additional barrels. Both the XCR and SCAR have this option although the XCR seems to be more available.

I love my FN45P which is why I originally looked in the SCAR but that is my only experience with FN....Has anybody here fired or owned both the XCR and SCAR? Any feedback?

I have run a lot of rounds through both and I own both.
I like my XCR but dealing with Robinson as a company in the past has been a real pain. You can order stuff from them and they will tell you a delivery date but you can wipe your a$$ with it cause they will send you your stuff if and when they feel like it. Which is a shame cause the rifle is nice, I have heard some guys have had problems with theirs but from what I've seen of their complaints most problems were self induced. My XCR has never failed me suppressed or unsuppressed.

I do feel that the SCAR is a more refind rifle and I do like it better, I wouldn't hesitate to grab it if the s@#t hit the fan.

If your looking for a cool toy to have grab a XCR if you know someone who has one in stock or who can twist Robinsons arm to deliver but if your looking for a primary rifle I would get the SCAR or a LMT AR.

    My .02 anyway

I think about SCAR 16s all the time too.... Oh wait... not what you meant.

XCR's are a nice design, but RA is run by a complete jerk. Also, XCR's have had their share of prblems.

Still, lots of owners seem to love 'em.

My SCARs have been 100% relaible, and I do feel it's a more "serious" weapons platform. I'm constantly impressed by some details of its engineering, and it has become my "go-to" carbine (not that I have to "go-to" it for any reason).

I can't say which suits your needs better, as I have very little time behind an XCR, but I can say I've never regretted getting the SCARs.

A year ago I was thinking of getting a 5.56 carbine.
Since I have no training on the AR-15 platform there was no need to rank an AR-15 any higher than any other when it comes to knowledge of use and maintenance.

I like engineering, mechanics, etc., and so I studied the mechanisms of many weapons, back to the M1 Garand and M1 Carbine.

    My short list was soon:
    - SCAR
    - ACR
    - XCR
    - LWRC
    - SIG 556

The SIG 556 and the XCR have similar bolt carrier groups. Very robust. I handled the XCR at a local store. It was nice.

I bought the SIG 556. Very easy to take down, clean, etc. After a year with the rifle I still had the itch. Couldn't really put my finger on it. I traded the SIG and started earning/saving for the replacement.

This time it was between the LWRC and the SCAR. Again, no AR-15 experience so that didn't decide it for me. What did was my faith in FN (I am a Browning fan boy). So, now I have a SCAR.

I hope that helps you decide.

Reason I didn't go with ACR - 1 in 9 twist on barrel.

I wish I could compare the two for you but since I decided not to get the XCR that won't be possible. However, I did research the XCR a few years back considering it verses the LWRC. From what I read I decided to go with the LWRC instead. I don't regret that decision.

More recently I purchase the SCAR 16. I usually don't like to recommend something until I've used it long enough to find out what cons there might be. I will say that so far I haven't had any issues with the SCAR. It handles very well and shoots reliably. First impressions from me, and my friends who have shot it, are good. It's well balanced without any ergonomic issues and is fun to shoot. If there were any negatives, it would probably be the reciprocating handle and that my optic mount is so high above the bore. Other than that nothing negative to say. The SCAR replaced a SIG 556 not my LWRC.

    Good luck on your decision.

thanks for the advice thus far guys! I've been looking for awhile and Im still very torn. My mind tells me the XCR as it offers everything (on paper) the SCAR does but my heart tells me SCAR. I just love this ugly rifle. Maybe I will need to buy both and figure it out after the fact.

Knowing both platforms very well, I chose the SCAR 16S for a semi-automatic carbine.

It does cost more but it shoots more accurately, recoil is virtually nill, and it's backed by one of the oldest names in weapons manufacturing. FN isn't folding up the tent anytime soon.

The SIG 556 isn't in the same league as the SCAR 16. I had a 556 and it was ok, I just see it being history in 20 years.

I am thinking about a Scar as well. It appears to be a fine weapon. I am also considering the ACR. I like the fold out stock on the ACR better and the ease of taking apart the ACR.

For the Scar, I like the lack of recoil and the egros. It also seems to be a solid all around rifle with the 1:7 twist and chrome lined barrel.

Anyone out there have both rifles?

Also, can anyone confirm the SCAR uses a standard AR magazine? I think both the SCAR and ACR use that same mag but I just want to confirm the fact with some folks that actually own them.

    Thanks,
    Tom

My scar takes standard mags. I like bravo company d&h mags.

I contacted a gun reviewer about the scar and acr and he liked both. He gave the edge to the scar. I have seen others pick the acr. 1 in 7 twist was the decider for me.
