Please forgive my naivety about this but since I have both the 17s and 16s (coming Monday), which would/should you choose the optics for. I know, I know . . . both. But under the circumstances, one will have to do for now. And I'm still going to have to decide on the type. At almost 63 and wearing glasses, I want the target as close as possible (ha) without taking away too much from the closer field of view.

Shoot, I recently went through the decision of what optic to run on my SCAR 16 and ended up with the aimpoint H-1. For me, that suited my needs. However, from what you say I'd recommend something with some magnification for you. Money seems to be a non-issue so look at the ACOGs, maybe a nightforce or leupold MR-T scope, or if you want the versatility of up close speed with the ability to go 4X when needed, maybe a S&B short dot or trijicon TR-24.
If it were me I'd put something lighter/faster on the 16 and something more magnified on the 17. But it depends really on your intended use. For benchrested shooting at longer ranges just put quality 3X9 scopes on both.
