I know what you mean about scratching up the finish. I take a length of genuine OD parachute cord and run it through the two eyes at the end of the receiver. I tie a square not or grapevine knot (see link) to terminate it into an endless set of loops. I do several loops to spread the weight across so I have some redundancy. It won't last forever and because of the expense of the gun I keep an eye on it for wear and replace it as soon as I see some fraying. The photo shows several loops. Two aare probably adequate.

I snagged a 16 at a local gunshow in columbus and the guy had put a cheap sling on it. After carrying it around the show for a couple hours, I noticed it had worn the paint off down to the metal. I was like WTF ?? I haven't gotten a sling for either of my scars yet. I just use it at the range for now, so no need for a sling yet.![]()

MP,
Unfortunately most of us, me included, look at our firearms as works of art and protect them from as much cosmetic damage as possible, preventing us from having the maximum amount of fun with them. For me I might have a firearm for awhile and then sell it at a gun show or something so keeping it in as close to new condition means a lot towards the re-sale value.
I remember when I got my first M1-A ultra match it was the same thing, treat it like a new born baby. A couple times at the range and matches where it would be raining , spraying on glue to make the gun stick in your shoulder better and you finally come around to the rental car mentallity with it . That's when the fun starts. It's just a tool at that point. Don't get me wrong, a lot of care still goes into it's existence but you don't go overboard. You protect what matters. You keep the bore clean and the rest of the mechanisms clean and properly lubed.
A long time ago a buddy of mine bought a nearly new car from a used car place his dad flew a helicopter for. He told his father he was going to get seat covers for it to keep them nice for when he sold it. His father said " why keep it nice for the next guy ? Use it and enjoy it. Let the next guy put seat covers on it. It's not going to command any big price advantage for perfect seat upholstery. "
I can't say I do that with all my guns but the ones I shoot competitively I don't worry about. Even though I currently am protecting the sling loops, I see myself going metal to metal with them pretty soon. If they get really beat up I can always either re-coat them or buy the new parts.
The rear piece is $155 . Thats kind of steep so re-coating might be smarter if it can be determined what the factory coating is. If it's black oxide, I get that done for free, no big deal, but it probably is some kind of parkerizing or something. I'm not quite sure if it's paint, but it might be. I just find it unlikely that they would paint it. But maybe.
I got some baking lacquer from Brownells a long time ago. You brush or spray it on and then put it in the oven and bake it. The stuff is absolutely bullet proof. you can't even sand blast it off ( I tried). Great stuff.
Anyway, have fun with those guns.
Randy
