    SCAR 16 vs AR info for new guy

    New guy here. From reading posts most of you have ARs. I just bought a 17 and you all have me looking at the 16 . I own / have owned multiple ARs, Mini14, AR180 , HK93, M1A, FAL, AR10, HK91, RFB . What, in your opinion, makes the SCAR16 worth the price to YOU. (Double quality AR $ ). I have not been able to even hold or view the 16 personally. Why would I want one ? Positives and negatives. Please keep it civil and informative. Thank you.

    Hi Grinder,

    based on my experience with the SIG550 family, I can tell you that the SCAR-L is a LOT more balanced. For different reasons the 550/551 family tends to be very front-heavy, whereas the SCAR's weight is perfectly distributed.

    This afternoon I'll take mine to the shooting range for the first time

    Cheers from Switzerland

    I am gonna catch a bunch of crap for this.... but in 5.56 I don't believe the SCAR is a sufficient enough improvement over an AR to make the switch for 95% of the users out there. As you said, double the $$$ as a good quality AR.

    In 7.62x51, thats a different story. Its combination of weight, balance, accuracy and reliability really set it apart in a category of weapon where you usually have to sacrifice one or more of the previous attributes in favor of the others.
    First Shirt thanked this.

    Grinder, have you shot your SCAR17 yet? Have you disassembled your SCAR 17 yet? What made the price of the 17 worth it to you? Was it the caliber?

    Why would I want one ?
    Either you want one or you don't. I don't think you do, which is fine. Talking someone into spending money is a salesman's job.

    In your "have owned" list... what are the reasons for the weapon being sold?
    Multiple ARs - which ones are gone and why?
    Still own the Mini14?
    Still own the AR180, or the HK93, or the M1A, or the FAL, or the AR10, or the HK91, or the RFB?

    I have owned three different 5.56 rifles. I still have two of them. The SCAR 16 being one of those two. The one that left, well it failed to meet my high expectation.

    That won't get crap thrown at you.

    This is how it is done:

    I personally don't think a DI gun is a sufficient improvement over a blow gun to make it worth more than an air rifle.

    That is how it is done.

    (Ya'll know I am just kidding, right?)

    Congratulations and welcome. Just you asking about the 16 means you'll also be getting one shortly, like alot of us have already done. Welcome to the club.

    Just picked up the 17 FDE today, so no feedback yet.
    The caliber and customer feedback made my decision to try one ( plus I just got some mags )

    ARs= Sold BM, DPMS, Eagle Arms Prebans
    Kept Colts and a S&W
    Mini14= all 3 history
    HK93= history
    Ar10= history
    Too much to get into all the reasons now

    The rest are still around here or there

    Here is a snapshot of some

    I probably will pick up a 16 to try
    It's a curse

    Again, thanks for the feedback
    More is appreciated

    Grinder-
    As a current SCAR16 and AR owner here are a few of my reasons for preferring the 16.
    1-Very clean and cool shooting rife. The AR is FILTHY after a range session. I was in a class where 4 out of 6 DI guns went down with malfunctions that I feel were due to simply
    needing cleaned and lubed. The SCAR and a piston AR purred like kittens.
    2-I feel like the SCAR's recoil is much less and quicker to get back on target.
    3-I really like the cheek weld on the SCAR.
    4-Ambi controls
    5-Sexy SCAR looks (that goes a long way! )
    The AR does have some benefits.
    1-Much lighter optioned out the same.
    2-Longer fore rails. I would go ahead and add that to the cost when buying a 16.

    My SCAR 16S was my first rifle purchase hehe. I came in wanting to get a single rifle I would train like crazy on. Additionally, I wanted a 5.56 weapon since the ammo is relatively cheap, readily available, and being a lighter-weight person the recoil would be easier to control. The rifles I was looking at were the following:

    Barrett REC7
    FN SCAR16
    KAC SR15
    LaRUe Tact OBR 556
    LMT CQB MRP Defender
    LWRCI M6A3
    Noveske SS Recon w/ VIS & SB

    It was a tough choice but in the end I went with the SCAR. I really liked how it takes down, the stellar reviews, its ergonomics, and the added features such as side-folding collapsible stock with a 2-position cheek riser. I know a lot of people say that the SCAR does not offer much of an advantage over a quality AR, but the simplicity of the SCAR design and the extras is what sold me. Im not too sure I would get a SCAR 17 myself, however I would definitely be interested in the SCAR Mk20 SSR if they ever release that to the civilian market.
