Factory FN 14" Barrel vs 16" Cut Down to 14"

Is there any benefit to getting the factory 14" barrel over cutting down my 16" barrel and having a FH pinned in place? I haven't seen a side by side profile view and maybe I haven't searched far enough - but what are the profile differences between the two? I have a NIB FDE 16S I haven't done anything with yet, so If I go the factory 14" route I'll just sell the 16" barrel.... Thanks in advance.

To my knowledge 14" SCAR 16s haven't been sold in the US, and MK16s are delivered with the 16" and 10" barrel.

IIRC, I've seen one 14" barrel 16 online posted by a member in Europe, but I don't think it was on this forum.

To me a 14" cut down in the US would be good only if you are going to use a muzzle device to get OAL to 16", otherwise I'd go to 10.5 or 12" to get the benefits of an SBR.

CQC SCAR barrels are popping up (10" for the 16), but I haven't seen any word on 14" barrels for them, but maybe they're coming, but they are $1200+ and I don't believe you'll find a huge market for your 16" barrel at that price, even if it's unfired, but I could be wrong...

Actually, the "standard" barrel for the Mk16 is the 14" (standard length for the Mk17 is 16"). You can see it here:

ETA: the benefit to a factory 14" would be saving on shop work costs that could be allocated to a Form 1, and not having to dick around with the gas settings to get the cut-down to work properly. I would keep the 16" for while you're waiting for a stamp. Someone may buy your 16" for the right price.

Already bought it...$1100 shipped w/paypal fee. No way I would pay MSRP on these, when I come around to getting a factory 10" Im staying under $1k.

    Argh! A sucker am I.

So I walk into my local LGS to assist my mom in purchasing a scope for her beloved 10/22. My friend the owner, ever an opportunist to part me from my hard-earned cash, says: "Hey, I know how much you love your SCAR, look what just came in today."
    photo.jpg

So I look and ooh and ah when he opens the box. He happens to have a yardstick right there...

And out of nowhere, my credit card leaps from my wallet when I'm not looking... and somehow gets itself violated for $1038 OTD! Now, it's distraught and I try and console it by seeing a 51t blackout in the glass case below that another CC allows itself to be slapped for another $96 OTD...

So, just over 16.2" when all put together.

My question to the experts onboard here: Pin/weld it on (EDIT: Rocksett doesn't count!) or file for the tax stamp and wait a year? If this was the 10", it wouldn't be a question. Thoughts?

Either way, it's sitting sadly at my mom's with her newly scoped 10/22 until I can accomplish either. Poor credit cards all swiped and roughed-up and we can't even go shoot to make them feel better.

    Regards,

ps: What's with the goofy new flash hiders they come with? I'm assuming it's a set up for a different suppressor manufacturer?

    Sony,

Thanks! Out of curiosity, why Stamp instead of pin/weld the hider?

    All,

If I do go to Pin/weld, Brakeout or blackout?

    Regards,
