The cleaner you are talking about is Mpro7 Gun cleaner. It works great for cleaning the Gas piston and is what I use. I let it soak in the Mpro7 cleaner for a few minutes, then hook the gas piston to a cordless drill, then spin it with a rag or scotch brite just like SGT says on this thread:
Gas Piston Cleaning and End-Coating
It does not leave any residue that I know of, but I do clean it off with alcohol just to be safe if I accidentally contaminated it somehow.
Thank you again Sarge for your infinite wisdom on all things Scar and Firearms related!
I just dip all of my piston in Carbon Killer for a few minutes while I'm cleaning other things. Then wipe with a rag or paper towel, the carbon wipes right off. This stuff is awesome. It's water based, biodegradable and smells like orange. I put a little on a brush to clean the piston cylinder, then wipe off. This is the best and easiest to use carbon cleaner around. The M7 PRO copper cleaner is also great for cleaning the bore.
Sorry for the newb question, but I'm a newb. This is my first ar and I don't want to F it up.
In the video above, they apply two types of oil, the first appears to be a clp knockoff, but toward the end, they apply a smaller bottle of oil to the rails and a few other points. Is this just a thicker oil? And if so, what is it? Would clp suffice?
Thanks again. As I said, first/only AR, so I convinced the wife that the Scar 17 was best option, since I was only buying one, lol.
Also, thank you for the awesome write up above.
