I recently got a sling (one week ago today) with mash clips to secure it the my 17. As I've been handling my 17 I've been noticing a lot of wear around the rear sling attachment point. The wear looks and feels like more than just paint chips coming off but is fairly deep in some places.
Now, like I mentioned, I've only had this sling for a week and haven't put it though any hard use. I am wondering is this going to continue to deepen to the point it breaks off. What are your thoughts?

I have been running a sling with a mass clip on my 17 also and have similar wear. I have been running a sling for a lot longer with a H&K style hook on my 16 and it hasn't worn the mount nearly as much. I think the mash clip just chews up the softer aluminum sling mount to easily.

Unfortunately that is pretty common. Icarried mine around a gun show for 2 hours and had the same markings. Metal on metal will do that.I need ot find a better sling attachment than my current one.![]()

Well when you find it let me know. I fear if I don't find a better way to secure my sling I'll need to replace the whole rear plate, come a year from now. I looked at the parts & pricing list, posted in the SCAR 16 section, and it listed the rear plate as $153.50 to replace.Originally Posted by mptoledo

How do our soldiers in the field combat this issue? They're the ones who really put their slings through hard use.

I have no proof, but from what I have heard from my associates is that the edges wear to a rounded state and then pretty much settle in. That appears to be the case on my 16S, but I do not put mine to day to day use. I have to admit that although my MASH clips have rounded the edges on my SCAR's sling mounting points, the edges do not display the gouging or galling that is described here.Originally Posted by Two Six Six

one solution would be to slip a plastic sleeve around the hook on the sling. This would keep it from getting worse. I am sure the sling will wear out over time so I would get extra. I am going to the to homedepot and lowes in a little while. When I find one, I will take pics and post them here.![]()

The steel mash hooks are going to wear the aluminum ring pretty quickly. There are sharp edges on mash hooks and they will continue to chew the softer metal. You might try a rounded brass hook, like the MAGPUL MS2 sling uses.

I Agree. I just checked all the MASH hooks I have and the edges on the ones that are on my SCAR are a little less sharp. The edges on others in my inventory are very sharp. Perhaps the manufacturer of the clip has something to do with the difference in the edges.Originally Posted by 101ABN327

Quite normal, unfortunately. It is one of the reasons we developed our Universal Wire Loop for these kinds of aluminum eyelets.

I have the same problem. This wear is prior to gutting Paracord and using the jacket to sheath the steel. I only used the sling 2 times without protection. Chewed it up good.
Haven't had any more wear or wear-through of para-jacket yet, it won't last forever but..
I melted the para-jacket ends prior to slipping on, and then partially melted the surface to aid in longevity, after it was sheathed around the steel. This is a Blackhawk! one-point sling.
