I have been hunting for a while for the perfect optic for my baby 17 for three gun. While trying to window shop ACOGs, but I heard of the SpectreDR, and I'm wondering how it compares.

Are there any guys out here who run with one and can provide a review?

Wags and Therm both have them and cant stop raving about them. :?

I'm reading a lot of mixed reviews about them. Some people love them, but some complain about finicky eye relief, drifting zeroes, etc.

Apparently, most of these problems come from the earlier versions, and these errors are supposed to have been fixed by now, but I hear a lot of bad rep on them.

But I LOVE the idea of switching between CQB and long range!

I can't get over that single feature, which was why the optic caught my eye anyway. But like I just said, is $2,000 worth it?

I have both an ACOG and the Elcan and like them both. The Elcan eye relief is fine for me, and no impact shift from 1 to 4x. I think it's the perfect glass for the 17! On 1x with the red dot on it works like an Aimpoint, only better since it has the etched reticle. The only negative I have with the Elcan is the battery type which took a lot of searching to find spares at ACE hardware and a medical facility site; would prefer a standard AA or AAA. good news is that I now have an adequate supply of spares, and worse case, the glass works fine as is with out being "lit" up.

+1 I only hope that the batteries really do have a 7-10 year shelf life. :?

FWIW:

Depending on how you want to use your rifle I would say the ELCAN could be a good choice.
For the ELCAN:
If you were to look at the overall weight of the ELCAN and compare it with the Aimpoint, (or EOTECH) plus the 3x magnifier plus all of the mounts (for example LARUE), its pretty close to the same weight and you don't get the cross-hair capabilities.

I was lucky enough to purchase the SpecterDR 1.5-6X (7.62) for a really great price(If you have military I.D. www.nitevis.com has really great prices BTWs).

Good luck.
