I have seen one that had these markings new on the shelf. Probably because it was test fired prior to shipping. Both of mine have very slight markings on the rail. I do have a two cent theory about it, though. In every case I have seen, the marks start exactly on the receiver rails directly above the very rear end of the bolt carrier. It lines up perfectly. It would seem that the carrier is moving slightly upward when it begins travel to the rear before leveling out. But if there is any depth at all to the markings (its always quite small), it should be most pronounced at its very start, closest to the barrel extension. Maybe others can confirm what they are seeing. My belief, like others, is that it gets to a certain point and stops.

I have a line scratch on the left side (ejector port) but not nearly as bad as above. Don't know when I first noticed but I normally keep it greased well. I have 300+rds through my 17. No markings on the right side (bolt release).

My FDE has them too! Noticed them after the first time I shot mine. Have 400+ rounds down range!
