You gotta give props to Sarge... it took him just 10 keystrokes and two clicks to provide the answer. I've got to agree, .22-250 should be perfect.

One of my Patrol Sergeants hunts squirrels with a .223, and really, it's all about the accuracy & challenging shot. Nothin' much left of Rocket J., except a small pink pile of goo....

Taking a prairie dog? Just bringing up the critter size, caliber & distance, but with all the accuracy & challenges!!!

Smallest game I've shot with a .308 was a squirrel, didn't work out to good, when the 150gr softpoint hit it it just turned the squirrel into a pink mist, not a scrap of salvageable meat.
Shot one years ago from my tree stand while deer hunting, it was barking at me all afternoon. It was roughly 75 yards and I head shot it. Looked like someone took a knife and cut the head off clean cause the rest of the squirrel was in perfect shape. Custom Sako in 308 with, at the time, a Burris 3-10x50 Fullfield.

I have been using a 24 inch barreled AR in 5.56 and a 6.5x55, 120 grain, both are great for dogen!

+1 on 22-250 and .223 many coyotes, rabbits, javelinas, and praire dogs have been handled at that range.
To the effect of the .308 on anything smaller than a coyote is really just devastating. Just ask Talhoffers squirrel and the turtle I dusted yesterday....

If you can afford a SCAR 17.....you can afford a proper varmint gun such as Savage in 22-250. .308 for varmints is just silly.

Of course I am compensating for something.... If I could kill something at 300 meters with my c*ck I would not need a gun!

I'm pretty sure that's how the whole inter dimensional rip got started in Fringe... someone shot a small rodent with a 50bmg because they thought overkill was a good thing.
