Hi all. Just got a black 17s that I plan on using for wild hog hunting here in Texas. Not being a tactical kind of guy, I was wondering what the disadvantages are if I remove the rear site and mount my scope with a set of regular rings. I have a NF 2.5x10 on a bolt gun that I would like to relocate to the 17s.
Is it really necessary to buy one of the $200 + mounting systems to have an accurate hog gun or zombie elimination tool if needed?
Great site here. I've already learned a lot of good stuff just reading hundreds of post. Hopefully I can contribute in the future.
Its nice to have the ability to quickly remove the optic and use the iron sights (BUIS) if needed. Also, a good mount will ensure the optic returns to zero when re mounted.
For your stated purpose, the back up sights are not a required piece of equipment on your rifle. You may find a need for some other set up for close in work (like a wounded hog that decides to make a final run at you), but that will be something to go on top of your optics or a 45 degree side mount, but this will be a decision for you based on how you hunt.
As for the mounting of the scope, I have sucessfully moved a scope from a bolt gun to my SCAR 17 without needing to change anything except to add a riser. Though your scope shouldn't need this based off of appearance, I had to do this due to the the front lense housing preventing a propper seating on the rail. With the riser (a GG&G QD mount) everything works as it's supposed to. I only bring it up so you're aware of the potential as you set everything up.
depending on how you want to run your rifle, and how you hunt, including what the hog will do. Given a situation of a hog closing distance on you, how will you acquire your target and make your shot? If your setup does what you need , then you are good to go!
All good points and well taken. Most of my hunting will be from stands / blinds. Of course there is always that angry boar charge factor that has to be considered. I have a Micro T-1 sitting around idle that I could hang on the side for those close in shots if needed. I guess I am just being "cheap" and trying to avoid paying $200 + on a scope mount when I already have several scopes and ring combinations just sitting idle in the gun safe. Another considerations is that most of the hog hunting will be at night with green or red lights. A hog charge in the middle of the night could get a little tricky!
Thanks for the suggestions so far. A good old Texas hog roast does sound pretty darn good! :new3_sign_goodidea:
Even the best QD one piece mount will not help you if you need to shoot close at a hog that is running at you 20 yards and closing. So any mount for your scope will be good enough to mount your NF with. I bought the ADM DELTA mount because I needed a mount for this rifle and NF. If you have no need for the QD, then you dont need it. You have been hunting them before so I am sure you know what you need on your rifle. Welcome to the Dark side. :?
after combat tours and being blown up in a IED attack, my M21 with standard Burris XTR rings never had to be taken off, I now shoot 3 gun every year and have tested many set ups, for close-in I shoot a vortex Spark on a angled mount, I cant my rifle and shoot both eyes open, quite fast I might add. The burris PEPR mount is solid and cheap , use the left over money to get the angled weaver mount and get a small red dot
Thanks for the warm welcome and comments folks. I've been trending toward the Dark Side for a few years now. I bought an FNAR last year and already have a few other AR's in the safe for that SHTF moment that we all know is coming someday in the future. :icon_e_smile:
Great suggestions guys! I will start looking for the Burris PEPR Mount tonight. That is one fine looking rifle you have there fmsniper. Thanks for your service sir!!!! :th_thanks:
I don't know if you have found the answer that you are looking for, but I am running a Leupold VX-r. Also have a DD offset mount with a Trijcon RMR attached.
That sounds like a great setup West Texas Gun Guy. You taking any hogs out that way?
