    Scar 17 Color Question

    Hello all,
I joined about a month ago and this is the first question I have posted. Apologies if it has been covered elsewhere. Basically, on a lark I bought a black SCAR 17s. It is one of the sweetest shooters I have ever owned. I want to add a flat dark earth 17s but am struggling to find one. I have since been able to find multiple black 17s but no FDE ones. Are black ones more common? I have also thought about buying a black one and just having a new color finish done. Any advice on whether and how to do this? Thanks again for your patience with what is probably a silly question to more veteran owners.

FDE are definitely more sought after. This is probably why you are having issues finding one in stock. If you wanna pick up another black one, you can spray paint it, duracoat it, cerakote it or even hydrodip it. If you check around, there are tons of threads on here where people have done all of these methods. I would hold out for a FDE one if I was you, that way you have both and don't have to mess with getting a black on coated.

    Welcome!

Thanks Kev! I had never even heard of hydrodip. Looks like I have a couple of leads to follow. But I agree with you: I have about 10 lines in the water for an FDE SCAR and will still keep trying to get one. Thanks again.

When I bought my FDE one, the black ones were nowhere to be found. I think FN makes 5-10k of a single color, then switches, so if you wait, availability will go up and down for the two colors.

Roger that. And I think you guys will be hearing more from me with questions. I am sold on this gun. I cannot believe I didn't get it sooner. Thanks.

Gos, my buddy who was a Army special forces vet (and one of the first people to sing the SCAR's praises to me) speculated that maybe they are making fewer FDEs since our "sand wars" (his words) are winding down.

Thats not the case , fde blends in with way more varietys of terrain than black so I doubt it's because of sand wars coming to an end

I think he was just kidding. What I have noticed from pictures though is that the FDE color scheme seems to vary a lot. Do my eyes deceive me?
