Leupold Owners: VX-R Scopes on the SCAR 17S

i am the very proud new owner of a SCAR 17s. Just can't believe what a sweet shooting .308 it is. I popped off 2 boxes of 20 rounds and hardly felt it. Try that with a bolt .308!

Anyway- it's optics time! I was just at the West Palm gun show and saw the Leopold VX•R Patrol 1.25-4x20mm (30mm) for the first time.
I was impressed. Loved the Firedot reticle.

My needs are simple- I want something that i can shoot hogs in Florida with, punch paper at the 100 yard range, some plinking out in the swamps, and if I need to, have a real battle rifle for home protection.

Given those specs, it seems a 1-4 or 1-6 would be ideal. So, if you have a LEUPOLD scope on a SCAR 17- please post your experiences with them. Thanks.

I've got a VX-R 4-12x50mm firedot scope on my M&P10, and like it well enough that I've been kicking around getting one for my next SCAR 17 (the current version is set up for close-med range with an ACOG).

As you would expect from Leupold, it's a solid, well made scope, with the crystal clear optics that Leupold is know for. If you've got the cash, you could do a lot worse.

My Scar17s is on its way to me and I think I might go with the Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24. I have several Vortex PST's and they are very solid scopes. The price is good but the only I am worried about is the power magnification.

The leupold VXR is a nice piece. I have the Patrol SPR on my 300blk. It's really freakin clear. For your needs it sounds like the VXR will fit the bill just fine. I was able to shoot a 14" steel circle at 300 yards consistently with that optic and the 300blk. I wouldn't want to shoot any further than that but I am sure you can.

Most any scope that has a true 1X allowing you to shoot with both eyes open and no distortion will fit your close range hog hunting needs. What you need to decide, and this wil affect the price of your scope, is what you upper level of magnification needs,to be. If you are satisfied with 4X, there are plenty of scopes to choose from, and the Leupolds are very good.

i have had a Leupy 1.5-5X (actually 4.5X) illuminated reticle on a FAL for a number of years. It has been great, but there is distortion at close ranges with both eyes open and the 4.5X does not reach beyond 500 yards without some real effort. From what you said, that may not concern you. The illumination helps primarily with close range stuff, acting like a dot in the center. Helps in low light at long ranges as long as,it is dialed down so it is not too bright. Don't need a dot beyond 100 yards IMO.

I have a Leupy MK 6 true 1-6X on the way. I would like to shoot out to 600 yards comfortably, and the 6X magnification should do that well. You pay for that extra magnification, so if you don't need it, save some cash. However, my experience with a 1.5 says you won't like it as much as a true 1X for close range stuff.

Why not get the right thing?

I use one. Awesome. Reticle made for pigs. Works well for anything else I've used it for as well.

Florida Diver Chris.... You don't by chance own a LWRC SBR do you?

Anyway, I ran two VX-Rs on my SCAR 17 and they both worked great. No problems at all!
