You see in this world there's two kinds of people my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig?

The guys who took these pics were also testing muzzle velocity of each rifle and came up with some interesting results...

The Chrono Project - Ramadi 2010

    Weapon system
    Muzzle Velocity Avg(fps)
    Range at Frag Threshold(yds)

    Mk18 CQBR 10.5"
    2447
    65 yds (2303 fps) / 906 ft/lbs

    Mk18 CQBR 10.5" S
    2465
    75 yds (2299 fps) / 903 ft/lbs

    LMT MRP 12.5"
    2567
    120 yds (2298 fps) / 903 ft/lbs

    M4 14.5"
    2667
    160 yds (2305 fps) / 908 ft/lbs

    M4 14.5" S Knight
    2693
    175 yds (2296 fps) / 901 ft/lbs

    M4 14.5" S AAC
    2699
    175 yds (2302 fps) / 906 ft/lbs

    Noveske N4 light 16"
    2752
    200 yds (2296 fps) / 901 ft/lbs

    N4 light 16" S AAC
    2779
    210 yds (2298 fps) / 903 ft/lbs

    Mk 17 13"
    2369
    15 yds (2345 fps) / 2151 ft/lbs

    Mk 17 13" S
    2369
    15 yds (2345 fps) / 2151 ft/lbs

    Mk 17 16"
    2475
    85 yds (2351 fps) / 2148 ft/lbs

    Mk 17 16" S
    2481
    90 yds (2342 fps) / 2131 ft/lbs

    Mk 17 20"
    2559
    140 yds (2341 fps) / 2129 ft/lbs

    Mk 17 20" S
    2570
    140 yds (2351 fps) / 2148 ft/lbs

All testing conducted Thursday 22 July 2010 between 1600-1700 at Det Ramadi, Iraq
    Temp: 106 F
    Baro: 29.21 InHg
    Humidity: 77 %
Ballistics calculated on iSnipe iPhone app
all 5.56 weapons tested with Mk 262 LR 77gr BC .340 frag threshold 2300 fps
all 7.62 weapons tested with M118LR 175 gr BC .490 frag threshold 2345 fps
    S denotes a suppressed weapon
M/V obtained through avg of 5 rds at 10 ft
Check out the fragmentation range on the 13" Mk17. I didn't even know 7.62mm would fragment. Apparently 5.56mm is more effective close in and 7.62 only becomes more useful once both calibers are outside their frag threshold due to it's higher energy and bullet weight.
