I ran some 175 Sierra Match Kings through my FNAR and found it likes them much better than the 168 SMKs I had been working up....by a factor of two.
So....what kind of velocities are you getting with 175 SMK (or similar) bullets?
For a comparison, I checked my logbook for the load I was using, 42.9 gr of Varget. Out of my 24" Savage 10 FCP, it produces right at 2620 FPS. The same load, with a slightly longer COAL (+ .060") for the FNAR yields 2502 FPS.
What caught my eye is that the 42.9 gr Varget load produced much a much lower SD in the FNAR than it did in the Savage. Still thinking about why that is.
Anyway, if you have any 175 gr. velocity info you can pass along for comparison, it would be appreciated.

Those that load 175 grain bullets don't have a chronograph?![]()

If you will bare with me I will get some velocities posted up for you in a few days. I was going to run some 175's this weekend but it was to windy for any real shooting.
Much appreciated. When you get the chance, please post them.

What do you need? Charge, powder and speed?
SC Shooter, that will work. Varget hasn't done anything impressive so far but I have a bit further to go before I am near max. I did notice that as the charge weight was increased, the group got better.
I've got a fresh pound of IMR 4064 sitting on the shelf.....per the burn rate table in the back of Lyman #48, Varget and IMR 4064 are next to each other. I've not tried that yet for the FNAR.

How about we talk about nodes. I forgot to chrono the loads I did the other day. I ran a ladder at 300 yards and you can judge the nodes for yourself. The target is 8" high and yes it was windy, Vegas is always windy in the winter. Gun was shot off of both front and rear bags. I'll get the chrono out next time. I'll get some other data up for you soon. Here were the specs
H4895, starting a4 40.0 gr and incrementing in half grain increases and ending at 42.5
Brass, lake city, case weights were 179-181 gr
Bullets, 175 sierra matchkings, 174-175 gr weight
Primers, Wolf
Ogive to case base was 2.273 and coal was 2.846

So we are looking at an accuracy node between 41.0 and 42.0? I've never used the single shot ladder but if I understand it correctly, an accuracy node will show vertical strings, correct?

I'm going to post a link to another forum simply because this guys sticky threads on precision ammo are a must read. This one starts out with the explanation of tuning to nodes.

Another great read on ladder testing.
