I have a goal for a "stockpile" of 5K rounds for the SCAR 17, and later for the 5.56. That's just for a stockpile. Like most people said, 1K would probably be the most "agile" amount you could have, but it sure don't hurt to have more if you can afford it!
Right now, I have almost 1500 for the 17. Adding a little more each month.![]()

Here is my current inventory. I just consolidated my collection down to a few certain calibers. I got tired of 20 or 30 odd ball calibers taking up valuable space.
I do plan on adding about 2k more .308 and .22. I didn't list my .22lr as I always have about 5k of them laying around

You see in this world there's two kinds of people my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig?
Palmetto state armory has Federal American eagle .308 150gr ammo for $11 a box of 20.
Federal 308 Win 150gr FMJ-BT 20rd Box - .308/7.62 - Rifle Ammunition - Ammunition
Ordered 200 rounds of the stuff awhile ago.

I need to go back and read those threads about the bulk .308 ammo. I forget which one was the preffered. I snagged a few battle packs awhile back, but I wasn't too impressed with it.
On a great note, I did get out to the range today, first time in monthsTook the 16, 17 and my HK tactical. I tested out the burris optical behind my xps on the cheap flip mount. Worked great, held zero, but it does need some adjustment to get the reticle in the middle of the burris magnifier

I think you are thinking either about 147 grain Malaysian surplus, or Radway Green, MP. Here's the thread where that is discussed:
cheap ammo in a scar 17?
I just put about 80 rounds of the Malaysian down range on Monday, you can see how it performed here:
3rd date with the SCAR, getting better!
Nothing too killer, but I was pretty pleased - especially with how windy it was.![]()

When I first started stocking up, I was told 2K per rifle caliber, 500 for shotgun or pistol. I've surpassed those numbers for all but the shotgun, but I keep buying. Guess you can never have too much!
I am being smart about this though (I hope), and pre-positioning most of my supplies at my BOL. That way, I don't have to pack/carry nearly as much.

The Latest and Greatest in TactiCool gear won't save you, but what's wrong with Surviving in Style?
I hate to go slightly off topic/ hijack the OP's thread, but would it be best to buy more 9mm FMJ target rounds for less money? Or, the inverse, less self defense hollow point rounds for more money?
I am under the impression that more is better. I have 2k of the former, but significantly less of the latter, Which should I continue to stockpile?
Make no mistake my friend. It isn't the revenge I'm after, it's the reckoning. http://www.youtube.com/user/Xendrius
No more than I want exploding in a house fire.![]()
I have over 8000 rounds of 5.56, over 5000 rounds of 7.62, 2000+ rounds of .45, 4000+ rounds of 9mm, 3000+ .22LR, and around 200+ of 12 gauge buckshot, 200+ 12 gauge bird shot, 100 slugs, and around 200 rounds of .410, .45 Colt, .38 +P, and now 30.06. Most of it is target rounds (about 75% of total) and the rest are self-defense, barrier/heavy grain, or match rounds.
I figure you need some for hunting for food, some for practice/training, some for trade/barter, some for when you really do not want to miss, and a lot for when zombies are outside the wire....
I find something that shoots well in the given gun, and then stock up on it. I keep most in bulk boxes -- easier to store and move when you need to. I have most of it in the place I bug out to.
Cartridge boxes full, I put into ammo cans or field boxes for ease of storage and transport. Most of the bulk boxes have the ammo sealed in plastic/visqueen bags inside, from the factory.
I gather it all up by just buying a little each paycheck -- after awhile you have a nice pile working up. I buy in bulk when sales hit. I don't reload yet, so it is all factory stuff...no surplus.
I have pretty much all I need now -- I just replace what I shoot up. I sat down one day and totaled up what I had spent on the ammo cache - I don''t recommend you do that until you're "done"!
