Looking for everyone's input. How much ammo is enough (I know as much as you can afford) but put that aside. How much is "enough" per caliber, per rifle for a SHTF type scenario? Example: How much ammo do you feel satisfied with or stocked up enough on for your AR or Scar 16/17? 1,000 3,000 5,000 +++ rounds? What's your comfort zone number?

Putting aside that cost for many is a hinderence, I think I personally will be stocking up 5k rounds of 7.62NATO. Add to that 5k of 5.56, 5K of .45, 5K of 9mm, 25k of .22, 5k of .22 WMR and I think I will be set. Of course all of this will be stored in an appropriate "locker" that is cool and dry.
Reloading would be extremely helpful for cost effectiveness.
IMHO, .22 ammo in a SHTF situation will become like currency. From a Gallup poll in 2011, 47% of Americans report they have a gun in their home or elsewhere on their property. That's the highest number Gallup has recorded since 1993, when 54% said so. What do you think is the most common gun caliber in these households?

Ammo is the currency of the future.
Gamecock has it about right IMHO.

I have go bags/vest with loaded mags, approx 300 rounds of 5.56 and 100 rounds of 9mm.
I have a couple of extra ammo cans and total I have and can place in a vehicle in under 2 minutes is approx 1500 rounds of 5.56 and 500 rds of 9mm and 300 rds of 7.62 for the 17.
IMO, That is realistic and will do me until I can "acquire" more ammo. In a SHTF, unless you live in a bunker, you're gonna want to be somewhat mobile.
I would suggest 1000 rds per gun for self defense. That is a lot of firefights and if you win you take the enemies guns and ammo...
If you lose it doesn't matter. I do agree that ammo will become the new currency so haveing more for barter is a good idea. Stick to the most popular cal. .22, 9mm, .45, .223, 7.62x39, .308![]()
I also have a vest that can hold 8 SCAR 17 mags and about 4 pistol mags. I agree that keeping mobile can be important which is why I have a BOB and also a duffel to throw my ammo and extra long guns in.....all that can be done in 3min or so.
Having ammo for the guns you own is vital.....but I really do believe in having all the .22 ammo for bartering, etc.
I also have this for hunting which requires no real store of "ammo": SAM_0147.jpg 2012 Hoyt Carbon Element
I would say 15K for each caliber.![]()
Very interesting thoughts, keep'em coming. I like the thinking with the .22 cal. That never really occurred to me. Makes me want to go by more .22 and a new .22 rifle.![]()
1000 rounds per firearm carried. It's extremely difficult to carry massive amounts of ammunition to support 5 guns when you have to bug out. If you are in a stationary environment, 15k per firrearm is not a bad idea. However, when SHTF comes calling, chances are you are going to bug out so keep that in mind with your bug out plans.

A pure democracy operates by direct majority vote of the people. When an issue is to be decided, the entire population votes on it; the majority wins and rules. A republic differs in that the general population elects representatives who then pass laws to govern the nation.
