This is a great question, since there are several recent issues involving people having access to weapons they have no business handling.

I was focusing more on the security do to theft or someone getting access to your weapons without your knowledge than I was concerned about them being destroyed.

Fire use to scare me the most but now unauthorized access tops the list and then theft.
I also just listed steel gun safe. I know there are several types of high quality to low quality gun safes. Like plate steel or sheet metal safes. I am just trying to see how we secure them in general. Please post a more detailed response if you would like about your gun storage.

IMO, if you own guns they should be locked up in a safe especially if you have kids. Only exception is if it is within your reach at all times.
There are many choices in gun safes. Your choice depends on where you live. If I were in a high crime area, a Fort Knox safe is the only way to go. If they want my guns, their going to have to work very hard to get into that safe. In a low crime area, close to a local fire department, a composite gun safe with a fire rating of an hour should do well. It affords some protection from theft and fire. Composite safes are much cheaper than hard safes but much better than gun cabinets. There is a lot that you can do with a composite safe to make it much more theft resistant as well.
My personal gun safe is a 700 lb. composite with a fire resistance rating of 1.5 hours at 1600 degrees. I added stainless steel to the walls to resist torch cutting and harden steel plating around the locking mechanism to resist drilling.
P.S. Steel weed wacker blades are some of the hardest steel you can buy cheap. That stuff is hard as hell to drill.
