    Gold and silver won't be worth crap when the nukes fall. You can't eat or shoot either of them.

    Ammo, Guns, consumables, alcohol are all you can depend on.

    But, you forgot to mention the required global religion (cult), and the immediate cleansing (execution) if you don't pray at the right time and facing the right direction.

    in the '80's when i was growing up (ok honestly proceeding from childhood through adolecents) there was a game called "Car Wars" set 50 years in the future. much of the timeline was similar to your story. scary if you think of it. all it takes is folks that are willing to trade freedom for "security".
