The Top 10 Greatest Handgun Cartridges of all time by Caleb • September 9, 2013 After literally minutes of research, the team here at Gun Nuts has put together what is the most exhaustive list of pistol cartridges and their place in history. Want to settle a 9mm vs. .45 ACP argument? Here’s your list. Want to gloat about your pet cartridge was number 1 of all time? Here’s your list. And now, the 10 greatest handgun cartridges of all time.
That was a good read P, thanks for sharing. I've sometimes questioned why I stick with the .40S&W in light of modern ballistics of the 9mm. Maybe I should ponder some more on the topic.
Well best of anything is subjective, I have no argument with the choices. I do think the lowly .22 should have had an honorable mention at least. It is the number one cartridge for hitmen all over the world. If it's good enough for the Massad it's good enough for me. I like my FNX .45 but I'm buying a Ruger SR22 just as soon as I can find one. Maybe a Mark III also, we'll see. I think every one should have a good .22 rifle and pistol in their arsenal. The new tactical .22's are awesome, even FN makes one.
Prospective gun buyers are told to get a 9mm because it's effective, but most of all because it's plentiful.... Yeah, right. The reason I've migrated a few handguns to .40
I'm shocked at the .380. Not so much because of its inclusion, but rather because of their rationale...because it was the cartridge that was used in the assassination that led to the start of WWI. So by that logic, if a 4.25 mm Liliput or 5.7 mm Velo-dog had been used in said assassination, then that cartridge would be one of the top 10 greatest handgun cartridges, of all time??? Ridiculous!
1. 45acp
2. 9mm
3. 40SW
4. 357 Magnum (I'd rate this above 40SW, but you have to shoot them out of a revolver. There are a couple autoloaders but they don't work that well)
5. 22lr
6. 44 magnum
7. 10mm
8. 38 special
9. 5.7x28mm
10. 380acp
Fixed it for them
For what it's worth, I have (5) 45's, (4) 9mm's, (2) 40SW's (2) 357 magnum's, (2) 22lr's, (1) 5-7, and (1) 380acp. I sold the 44mag because it was too expensive to shoot, but it was fun. I suppose I also have (2) 38 special's since I have (2) 357's.
I personally think the 357 sig should be on the list. It's got terminal ballistics that are competitive with the 45, magazine capacity of a 40, and the reliability of a 7.62x39mm. Plus the capability to be converted to or from a 40 caliber weapon with a simple barrel change for cheaper practice.
When someone shoots a .357 Magnum in central North America, wildlife in Africa runs for cover.
