I talked myself into an FAL

Well I bought an FAL out of curiosity and the price was right. It is an Argentine imported by S.A.C. I have figured out why the price is right though, the font sight is in the 12:30 position so I can't adjust the windage far enough to get zero. I know very little about FAL's and am wondering how to rectify this.

Also I would like to find some info on this flavor of FAL. Curious if all the parts are Argentine or if it was someones project.

Thanks

If you have a S.A.C. receiver (i.e., inside of magazine well on the right- "IMP. BY/S.A.C./LATTA, SC" and probably SN as "x00XXX), your rifle will be a parts build. :(
Factory guns will be imported by National Arms/Billerica, MA. (late 1970's/rarer) and by Pedro O. Bello/West Palm Beach, FL. (early 1980's). :D
You probably still have a very nice rifle though!!! :?
Please post pics of left and right receiver markings!!!

Thanks for the replies:

As for the windage I have move the rear sight as far as I can and I can't get it within 4 inches of zero.

As for markings, I don't see any inside the mag well. Just the (IMP BY S.A.C. LATTA, SC) on rear bottom left corner of the receiver. And the serial # is only a 4 digit stamping and is in the 1600"s. It is on the right side with the ARGENTINA stamp. I will keep looking but for now I have a few pics.

Hope these help. I can take more close ups.

The overall condition of the gun is great just the receiver is a little lighter in color than the rest of the gun and the front sight is off to the right a little.

Thanks

doc,
I'm no expert, but I'll tell you what I (think I) know.

This is an Argentine receiver (the upper is the "gun" part of an FAL, unlike the AR-15). Fabrica Militar de Armas Portatiles (FMAP) was (maybe still is?) licensed to build FAL's by FN.

Bad news is that it is indeed, as mentioned before, a parts gun. The parts that your gun is made of are L1A1 SLR (self loading rifle) configuration. The UB number by the selector means (I think) that your lower was made by BSA in England.

Google L1A1 and you'll find lots of info, but probably nothing specific to your FrankenFAL.

Neat gun, I hope you can get it fixed. I've got a DSA STG58C, but I've been wanting an L1A1 for a while.

If you go to falfiles.com and look in the forums, there are lots of good fal smiths... Sounds like you need a slightly different locking shoulder that will let your front sight index properly. This may be something you can do yourself, but IIRC to remove the barrel safely (w/o damaging it) you need a special tool/block...

Thanks guys,

Man their is a lot of info on these guns. I definitely want to keep it around. It eats anything I put in it, I can't say that for my ar-10. Just can't get it to hit what its pointed at. I will check the falfiles and see if someone can help me. No one local seems to have the right tools.

If anyone knows a good smith in eastern NE or SD let me know.

Thanks,

doc
