    Cutting your barrel

I just happened to see the thread about the guy who unfortunately had to get a new barrel made after he cut his scar barrel.

    So heres the deal guys
Using a metal saw blade to cut your barrel the chance of the chrome chipping is VERY high.

However using a cutting wheel(the fiber discs) the chance of it happening is significantly lower.

I have not had personal experience doing this but I would think an EDM machine would be your best bet for a precision cut without the harshness of a blade or cutting wheel.

I worked in the surface finish department for roughly 6 months so the information is accurate. I just called my old boss to confirm so i dont give you guys any false info.

Any questions feel free to post them up

What about the lathe or a CNC machine to cut the barrel? My last 2 barrel jobs were done with the lathe and I have had no issues or chipping (remington 700 and my FS 2000) to me a saw or cutting wheel are get by tools, this is a weapon that you just dont want to get by with.

I feel that the pressure from the bit against the material (which is necessary - obviously) that is leading to the flaking (or chipping) at the muzzle. Wire burning would make a clean cut but I'm unsure about the heat associated with it, and what it will do to the plating.

    Consider yourself lucky devilman.

As Country Boy pointed out, it cost a member a barrel. I still stand by my position, as I will not recommend cutting a plated barrel.

With proper de-burring and clean up work there should be no problem using a cut off wheel. However well its not the most accurate tool by far.
Im just relaying the info the lead surface finish engineer has told me.

No where did i say either one will not still allow your barrel to chip but in his experience it has a lesser chance.

If you really want to be on the safe side. Strip your barrel. Cut it then get it rechromed.

Most of the guys wouldn't know where to send the tube to have it done, it wouldn't be cost effective, and the turn around time is at least 12 weeks.
