Like it's been said already in one of your other threads, you'll get alot of opinions.

    Here is mine...............

    On the 16s

I have a Trijicon ACOG T31F with a Doctor Optics red dot. It's a nice optic, 4x power for distance and the red dot for up close, but what I don't like about it is that the red dot is positioned high on the rifle. Sometimes the reticle blooms and you need to tape off part of the fiber optic light gathering tube to dim down the reticle, also over time the fiber optic light gathering tube will start to check and crack. It also has a short eye relief.

I also have several EOTechs and Aimpoints that I have run with a 3x magnifier. It works and I set mine up with a Larue QD pivot mount so I can swing it out of the way when I want just a red dot and back when I want some magnification. The only thing I don't care for with this set up is the added weight, but with the QD mount I can easily pull the magnifier off.

I have used a 1-4 scope, I thought I would like this setup the best using the 1 non magnified setting and the 4x for longer range, but what I found was that I liked using the Aimpoint with a 2MOA dot on my 16s the best.

    On the 17s

It was easier since I spent alot of time messing with the 16s. I wanted something that I could use up close like a red dot and out to the what I feel is the practical limit of the 17s. I also didn't want to put something to large and heavy on it and I didn't want to break the bank with it.
I went with a 1.5-8x28 compact scope, for me it works great, only thing I'm thinking of doing is to add a small micro red dot off to the side, this way I can leave the scope set on a higher power and use the red dot for up close. This would make it faster switching from longer range targets to up close targets.

I don't use my SCAR16s and 17s to just punch paper, I'm not looking to shoot small groups with them. I wanted to use them as fighting carbines, quick solid hits on targets with standard ammo.

If your planning on doing most or all of your shooting from a bench and are interested in just shooting small groups you might want to narrow down your choices to what the guys who are doing the same are using, something with a far bit more magnification.

16S, for 100 & less, without committing homicide on the checkbook, I humbly suggest: http://www.leupold.com/tactical/prod...ar-1-5-4x20mm/

    For the 17S...

If you're shooting the same short distance, there's no reason the deviate from the above. It's a good piece of glass and you can always add a MRDS on a 45 degree mount if you really need or want one for the snap shooting.

I prefer 1-4x with an illuminated circle reticle like the burris tac30 or leatherwood cmr, this eliminates the need for an extra red dot.

Thats all in how you use it, with a small red dot mounted to the side, you eliminate the need to reach up and change the power setting. Set the primary optic to 4x and sight it for longer range and sight the smaller red dot for 50yds or closer. Then just cant the rifle to switch between two optics, ends up faster than having to adjust the power. Again it's just all in how your going to use it.

The ACOG w/ attached RDS is a good way to go for both rifles, ( with the ACOG that's best suited for a particular caliber ) or you can have either an ACOG or other scope alone with a micro size RDS mounted separately and canted off to the side.

I like having flexibility with my optics/sighting systems. Near or far, you'll want to be able to transistion quickly and smoothly between targets.

I have little experience with variable power scopes. The knowledge I do have is with military issue optics such as MARS, ACOGs, Eotechs and Aimpoints. I much prefer ACOGs and Aimpoints family of optics for my weapons. My all around favorite optics combo is a T-1 Micro w/ 3X magnifier on a LaRue pivot mount.

Several of my EBRs have T-1s mounted on them, ( such as my SOCOM-16 ) while some of the others EBRs have various versions of ACOGs sitting atop them, ( like my 516 ).

I look forward to us going again S. and this time my focus (ha) will be on the optics.

Thanks Sgt, simple and to the point. There's a few here that have it and it's one that I plan to look at.

Why not just throw one of these on your 17S and call it a day?

Guess that's the "spend as much on optics as you do your rifle" model . . . actually more. Man! Normally I would, but I have to draw the line somewhere . . . ha.
