OPTIC CHOICE FOR A SCAR 17s or 16s

Please forgive my naivety about this but since I have both the 17s and 16s (coming Monday), which would/should you choose the optics for. I know, I know . . . both. But under the circumstances, one will have to do for now. And I'm still going to have to decide on the type. At almost 63 and wearing glasses, I want the target as close as possible (ha) without taking away too much from the closer field of view.

I'd go with an optic for your -16, first.

Probably the better of the two platforms to start off with, especially with optics.

Well since this is the third thread on this same topic you have started, I guess you really want an answer.

Lets get some info first, what is your intended role for each rifle and what is your budget.

Until we get that figured out I will work on the assumptions that I have made by reading your posts.

I will assume from your original post that due to your eye-sight, the Iron sights really aren't gonna cut it for what you want to use it for. Now I've also gathered that you want some magnification but also want to compromise by being able to have the optic somewhat useable at closer ranges.

The optics you seem to be getting at are the 1-4 or 1.5-5 type range of magnification. Decent for close to medium range.

Now depending on your budget and intended use, you could go three different ways.

    1. Buy 2 less expensive optics for the same price as 1 really nice one

    2. Buy a good optic and a good QD mount. This way you can swap back and forth. Record your zero on each rifle and with a good QD mount as long as you have your zero correctly applied, you should be pretty close each time you swap.

    3. Buy for one and wait for the other. To do this figure out which is more suited to fill your intended role and choose that one. If you have limited ammo funds and want to shoot alot, the 16 would probably serve you better. If your looking to hunt, the 17.

Yes, that is the point (ha). Wanting good info about choices to make and what other's think and have done themselves. I appreciate as much as I can get also. Hence, threads on a few sub-forums since not all here go to them all.

Your assumptions from what I've said already are accurate. However, I'm not hunting. Seems that I'm looking for good optics for the 16s, since that will be probably be used the most. Dollar amount . . . I'd want a good one but it doesn't have to be the best right now. Knowing me, that'll come when it's time for the 17s in a week or two . . . ha ha. Not really.

Thanks for the questions you pose too. I appreciate them.

Not at all. I'm not that experinced shooting these calibers but planning on it shortly, obviously. Mostly shotgun for hunting years ago. Mainly will be using a range with another good member here, as well as locating some property where we can shoot without the crowds breathing down our necks. But just to clarify, even if I had a great deal of experience, you wouldn't be wasting my time in sharing your experiences. You know as much as anyone on forums that sharing information is what it's all about. Learn something everyday from others, right. But also, don't feel that you would be wasting your time either. Even if I knew more about it than you, no matter what your qualifications are, we'd still have a good discussion.

Simply, just want to know what others tend to like and use for their own purposes. Again, I'll also be getting hands on help from a pretty experienced guy here but still wanting as much info from all the good members here, as well.

    Shoot,

Fair enough. If its for range use, I concur, get something for the 16 as you stated your apt to shoot it more.

What distances will you be doing most of your shooting at?

Also, what budget are you working with?

And lastly, I have the feeling you already have an optic(s) in mind, if you care to share we can try and figure out if its the right fit
