hello to all. Im new to this forum and i just purchased a scar 17 in fde, im looking for a nice optic to mount on her. I noticed many of you guys were runing the trijicon accupoint 24 1-4x24, but i think i want something with a little more magnification so what do you all think about the 3-9x40?

I am not sure if anyone else on here besides me has one...but I could be wrong about that.... I have not shot nor hunted with mine yet, but I have used them in low light and at night to look at objects in the woods and across the water, after dark, after I bought it, and I can attest that it really comes into its element then....

Anyway, you may have heard about Bill Wilson, the founder and owner of Wilson Combat. He has a 10,000 acre ranch in Texas where he hunts feral hogs at night a lot.

Here's a link to him discussing the various optics he has used for that purpose through the years, and what he thinks about Trijicon Accupoints, including the model you inquire about:

The Optics Talk Forums - Low light scope test 2

Here is another link you might want to check out -- it compares the Trijicon 3-9 x 40 to the Nightforce 2.5-10 x 32, and offers some interesting insights -- you might want to pay particular attention to the discussion about shooting using ambient moonlight with the Accupoints:

Trijicon 3x9x40 or NF 2.5x10x32 for best low light performance? [Archive] - Home of the 6.8 SPC - 68forums.com

Ok great I will definately take a look at those links. I don't do much hunting but I'm interested in an optic that can help me shoot out to 300 or 400 yards that's why I'm curiouser about the 3-9x40

Sorry I can't help you further. I don't have anything that I shoot out that far.

Did you look at this Sticky: Optics for your SCAR 16 or 17

Here's my personal opinion of the accupoint. I've got a TR20R mounted on my personal 17. We took it off a M1A1 I took in on trade. I ended up having to get the Trijicon Quick release mount for it as mid height and 1' rings were too low, and the higher ones were too high. The quick mount allows it to fit perfectly for me. The variant I have is the one with the iluminated red carot. I'd say for a site, it works but has some deficiencies. There are no ticks like you see on a standard reticle or a mil-dot site. So, you pretty much have to do your own range adjustment on the fly. Same for transvers as there is nothing to guide you left and right of the center reticle. In it's defense though it is crystal clear. The tritium is nice and it doesn't get too bright like some I've seen. The fiber for drawing in ambient light works perfectly, but is a bit bright itself that you lose some of your "tacticool" precense points. Personally, I'd prefer a mil-dot like a leupold MK4 if I was shooting for long range and I've got a Trijicon TA648RMR-308 on BKO with one of my distributers right now, and that will fine a pernament spot on my 17. I'll probably take the TR20R and put it on a FAL or other .308 rifle that I use for shooting tannerite at 100 meters or so.
