Hey all, I thoroughly enjoy looming about this forum browsing the wealth of knowledge available here. And This winter I have every intention of picking up a SCAR 17 along with a large stash of ammo.

During my research, I stumbled upon this new .308 cartridge recently developed. It's only 130gr as compared to the standard 147gr M80. But the velocities are up by 3000fps and SOCOM basically said it was an improvement upon the current M80 ball. At first glance, it looks like a pretty devastating round...so my question is..has anyone shot this type of ammo through their SCAR? The research I did stated it was specifically designed for the MK 17.

If I wanna stash, If this stuff is good to go, I'd pick it up instead of standard M80. Can anyone testify? 8)

I have picked some up. It is the top box in the picture above.

I have not shot it yet, but I hope to remedy that this weekend. If I can get away, I will post some pix of the target.

It is $24 a box, versus $12 a box for XM 80. So bring your checkbook.

It is a SOST (Special Operations Science and Technology) open-tip round, designed to be used in the short barrel SCARs. 130 grain as you know. Roughly 2900 FPS.

Id love to see a pic of the actual bullet.

Is this more of a long range target round or a devastation on flesh round?

Designed for CQB, to be used in the short barrel Mk17.

Open tip bullet was somewhat controversial because of the Hague Convention requirement that hollowpoints not be used in combat because they can cause undue pain and suffering. The SOST round in 5.56 was designed to be "barrier blind" and the open tip bullet helps dig into glass on angled windshields, and increases lethality of the 5.56 round. I would assume the open tip design on the 7.62 round would have the same effect (increased lethality, since 7.62 rounds are barrier blind from inception).

You could still shoot it long range, but its downrange effectiveness will be diminished by its lighter weight, and it is going to move around more if there is wind, because it is lighter....

I will see if I can pop up a picture of the cartridge....

I've shot it and will say that I did not see any measureable accuracy increase over the M80 ball round. I did not test any terminal ballistics

There is a significant POI shift as compared to the M80 ball so if you do stash it, zero with it, record you optics settings for future reference, and then re-zero with your regular blasting ammo

Here is what the cartridge looks like up close, focused in on the bullet portion:

Here it is side by side with an XM118CS 175gr. round, and a Federal Gold Medal Match 168 gr. -- take note how the manufacturer extends the round out of the cartridge itself to ensure the length of the cartridge is long enough to ensure proper feeding:

Here they are side by side (the GMM is the real shiny one -- the military rounds are not as polished):

Note also how they crimped the casing on the round....

Oh very very nice!
That is something I would like to have stashed away for certain!
I have to say .308 is truly my fav. round without a doubt, has been since I bought a HK91 as my first non hunting style rifle when I was 19 (almost 20 years ago!)....

You Army guys have all the fun! :-D :)

I would not think it would be an appreciable accuracy difference between the two -- the SOST rounds were designed with the open tip bullet to aid in barrier penetration (particularly angled glass windshields at checkpoints) and a special propellant was used to make the round a little hotter (adds 200 FPS, not unlike the Hornady Superformance rounds' approach).

It is designed for urban combat, with the shorty barrels, to enhance lethality.

To me, honestly, XM80 is more than accurate enough. If you want to cut threads, get a bolt gun and a shooting jacket...if you want a carbine to aim quickly and still hit a pie plate, get a SCAR....

I would have to say that it would certainly come in handy in certain situations you could find yourself in, especially in an urban situation. I keep a mag loaded with some at all times in a go bag, and keep it marked differently.... :?

Yes, same reason I carry .357 Sig off duty..... I love the extra penetration power (if it is good enough for those who protect POTUS it is good enough for me!)

I can already tell the SCAR is going to become my new favorite do all rifle... The Elcan is GREAT on top and the whole thing is just sooo light!

It will replace my DS Arms SA58 for my lightweight go to rifle...
That was light for a .308 but I never loved it as the LOP was too long and adding a coll stock added too much weight... The SCAR is lighter and has an adjustable stock!

If I can find some of that ammo I will have to pick up a few boxes, zero it in and record it in a book to keep in my backpack in the car with 3 mags.

Yup! :D You gonna get to the range this weekend to run that M118LR and 110gr TAP?

If I decide to take the SCAR, I'll post some MK 319 target pics.

I have a few things to eval so not sure if I'll get to it

Yes, thanks for that post Clyde. I think I'm with Yogi here, The 24$ is kind of steep but this is some good SHTF, New England, urban type ammo. Any shooting I do is probably within 300M, so this should work perfectly for all purposes.
