2nd Range trip with FNAR- just when I am about to give in; it does this.

I had been testing out 165 gr. Hornady SST over Varget powder and CFE 223 earlier and not getting spectacular results... but, enjoying the my lil free time to explore load options.

    165 SST
    47.5 gr. CFE 223

My 44- 44.5 grain Varget loads with the SSTs were more spread out and none were under 1.6" at 100 yards.
Feeling frustrated, I went on to shoot some box ammo at steel and play around at 150 and 200 yards.

I noticed more heat coming off the barrel and figured I would try the last few rounds on a hot barrel and see how it shot.

    5 shots - 100 yards, HOT barrel.

This barrel was smoking hot.... some might of said too hot but, I know a lil about FN systems and wasnt afraid to shoot it.
FN has been established to have great combat proven barrels and I am lucky to have carried/ shot them during a few of my 7 combat tours thru my Army career...
I am just glad to see that kind of quality in the FNAR for the street market.

    The CFE 223 looks promising.....
Now onto trying some more lighter 165 SST/ Varget combos out to see if I can get this combo to shoot MOA.

I was really surprised, I could see it happening thru the scope each shot.... hopefully I can my SSTs tightened up next range trip, I got some loads in increments from 43- 44 grains of Varget and a longer COL now to try.

Hmm, may want to try H4895, IMR 4895 or IMR4064 for a suitable substitute that is not too difficult to find locally.

My experience with CFE .223 is the powder seems to amplify powder/bullet incompatibilities in accuracy by making groups quickly open up fast.

CFE .223 is also very temperature sensitive, making it more likely to change behavior/groups/pressure/velocity as the gun/ammo warms up.

Also, I've noticed CFE .223 ramps up the pressure curve at the FNAR gas port more than other powders I've used.

Right when you start noticing very mild to mild pressure signs, it starts pushing those brass cases out hard.

Could have been a one time observation with the very strong extractor mark on the brass, but something to keep in mind.

I bought CFE 223 for the 6.5grendel... the 6.5 shooters seem to love it.
I only bought a pound of it to try; I am stacked deep in H4350, Varget, and HP38 for my other loads so I am trying to really work the Varget.
Next range session is with a broader range so hopefully I can get a calmer wind and try again.

Absolutely FNAR will shoot much better with a hot barrell and a cold barrell but will act up and spread out while its heating up.
